Tuning field-induced energy gap of bilayer graphene via interlayer spacing

Yufeng Guo、Wanlin Guo、Changfeng Chen2008-06-16Applied Physics Letters

Our first-principles calculations reveal surprisingly high sensitivity of the field-induced energy gap of bilayer graphene to changes in its interlayer spacing. Small adjustments in the interlayer spacing near its equilibrium value produce large modulations in the gap over a wide range of field strength. We elucidate…

Effect of annealing on the martensitic transformation and magnetocaloric effect in Ni44.1Mn44.2Sn11.7 ribbons

Haicheng Xuan、Kun Xie、D. H. Wang 等 7 位作者2008-06-16Applied Physics Letters

The Ni44.1Mn44.2Sn11.7 ribbons were prepared by melt spinning. A single-phase austenite with L21 structure was confirmed in the melt-spun ribbons at room temperature. After the heat treatment, the martensitic transformation temperature increases obviously in the annealed ribbons. This method may be an effective way to…

Diamondoids and their derivatives have found major applications as templates and as molecular building blocks in nanotechnology. Applying ab initio method, we calculated the quantum conductance and the essential electronic properties of two lower diamondoids (adamantane and diamantane) and three of their important der…

Enhancement of the External Quantum Efficiency of a Silicon Quantum Dot Light‐Emitting Diode by Localized Surface Plasmons

Beak‐Hyun Kim、Chang‐Hee Cho、Jin‐Soo Mun 等 9 位作者2008-06-16Advanced Materials

The electroluminescence intensity of a silicon quantum dot (Si QD) light-emitting diode (LED) with an Ag layer containing Ag particles can be enhanced by 434% relative to a Si QD LED without an Ag layer. The large enhancement is attributed to an increase in radiative quantum efficiency as a result of coupling between…

Substantial progress on field effect transistors (FETs) consisting of semiconducting single wall carbon nanotubes (s-SWNTs) without detectable traces of metallic nanotubes and impurities is reported. Nearly perfect removal of metallic nanotubes is confirmed by optical absorption, Raman measurements, and electrical mea…

Electrostatic modification of infrared response in gated structures based on VO2

M. M. Qazilbash、Z. Q. Li、V. Podzorov 等 8 位作者2008-06-16Applied Physics Letters

We investigate the changes in the infrared response due to charge carriers introduced by electrostatic doping of the correlated insulator vanadium dioxide (VO2) integrated in the architecture of the field effect transistor. Accumulation of holes at the VO2 interface with the gate dielectric leads to an increase in inf…

Paramagnetic adsorbates on graphene: A charge transfer analysis

O. Leenaerts、B. Partoens、F. M. Peeters2008-06-16Applied Physics Letters

We introduce a modified version of the Hirshfeld charge analysis method and demonstrate its accurateness by calculating the charge transfer between the paramagnetic molecule NO2 and graphene. The charge transfer between paramagnetic molecules and a graphene layer as calculated with ab initio methods can crucially depe…

Structural trends in clusters of quadrupolar spheres

Mark A. Miller、James J. Shepherd、David J. Wales2008-06-16arXiv

The influence of quadrupolar interactions on the structure of small clusters is investigated by adding a point quadrupole of variable strength to the Lennard-Jones potential. Competition arises between sheet-like arrangements of the particles, favoured by the quadrupoles, and compact structures, favoured by the isotro…

Properties of ideal Gaussian glass-forming systems

Andreas Heuer、A. Saksaengwijit2008-06-16Physical Review E

We introduce the ideal Gaussian glass-forming system as a model to describe the thermodynamics and dynamics of supercooled liquids on a local scale in terms of the properties of the potential energy landscape (PEL). The first ingredient is the Gaussian distribution of inherent structures, the second a specific relatio…

Yukiharu Takeda、Masaki Kobayashi、T. Okane 等 15 位作者2008-06-16Physical Review Letters

The magnetic properties of as-grown Ga1-xMnxAs have been investigated by the systematic measurements of temperature and magnetic field dependent soft x-ray magnetic circular dichroism (XMCD). The intrinsic XMCD intensity at high temperatures obeys the Curie-Weiss law, but a residual spin magnetic moment appears alread…

The Stability of an Expanding Circular Cavity and the Failure of Amorphous Solids

Eran Bouchbinder、Ting-Shek Lo、Itamar Procaccia 等 4 位作者2008-06-16arXiv

Recently, the existence and properties of unbounded cavity modes, resulting in extensive plastic deformation failure of two-dimensional sheets of amorphous media, were discussed in the context of the athermal Shear-Transformation-Zones (STZ) theory. These modes pertain to perfect circular symmetry of the cavity and th…
