Abstract Polyelectrolyte multilayers (PEMs) are now widely used for biomedical applications. In this work, we investigated the primary osteoblast adhesion properties of PEMs of poly( L ‐lysine) (PLL), poly( L ‐glutamic acid) (PGA), poly(alginic acid) (Palg), and poly(galacturonic acid) (Pgal). In order to compensate f…

Synthesis and the physical properties of MnZn ferrite and NiMnZn ferrite–polyaniline nanocomposite particles

Özlem Yavuz、Manoj K. Ram、Matt Aldissi 等 5 位作者2005-01-01Journal of Materials Chemistry

We present a novel approach to synthesize MnZnferrite (MZF)–NiMnZnferrite(NiMZF)–Polyaniline (PANI) particles, where MnZnferrite is the magnetic core, and PANI is the conducting layer. The commercial ferrite and Ni–ferrite particles are primarily used, and the PANI–ferrite particles with a hybrid structure are synthes…

Oxidising CO to CO2 using ceria nanoparticles

Thi X. T. Sayle、Stephen C. Parker、Dean C. Sayle2005-01-01Physical Chemistry Chemical Physics

We calculate, using simulated amorphisation and recrystallisation (A&R), that ceria (CeO2) nanoparticles, about 8 nm in diameter, comprise a high concentration of labile surface oxygen species, which we suggest will help promote the oxidation of CO to CO2. In particular, the ceria nanoparticle contains a high proporti…

Barbara Ventura、Alessandra Degli Esposti、Beata Koszarna 等 5 位作者2005-01-01New Journal of Chemistry

A detailed photophysical characterization of a series of six free-base corroles with different substitution patterns at meso-positions is presented. In air-free toluene at 295 K, the luminescence quantum yields range from 0.13 to 0.22 and lifetimes vary from 4.1 ns to 6.3 ns whereas in air-saturated toluene the lifeti…

Polypeptide hydrogels via a unique assembly mechanism

Timothy J. Deming2005-01-01Soft Matter

There is a long history of man's use of materials derived from peptides and proteins. These natural materials possess sophisticated mechanisms of nanoscale self assembly, which have inspired the design of many synthetic and biosynthetic amino-acid based materials. These materials are attractive since they can have exc…

Chemical structure and physical properties of cyclic olefin copolymers (IUPAC Technical Report)

Ju Young Shin、Ji Yong Park、Chenyang Liu 等 5 位作者2005-01-01Pure and Applied Chemistry

Abstract Cyclic olefin copolymers comprise a new class of polymeric materials showing properties of high glass-transition temperature, optical clarity, low shrinkage, low moisture absorption, and low birefringence. There are several types of cyclic olefin copolymers based on different types of cyclic monomers and poly…

Low symmetry phase in (001) BiFeO3 epitaxial constrained thin films

G. Shirane、Guangyong Xu、Haruhiro Hiraka 等 6 位作者2005-01-01DR-NTU (Nanyang Technological University)

The lattice of (001)-oriented BiFeO3 epitaxial thin film has been identified by synchrotron x-ray diffraction. By choosing proper scattering zones containing the fixed (001) reflection, we have shown that low-symmetry phases similar to a MA phase exist in the thin film at room temperature. These results demonstrate a…

Modified Spin-Wave Theory for Nanomagnets: Application to the Keplerate Molecule Mo72Fe30

O. Cépas、Timothy Ziman2005-01-01Progress of Theoretical Physics Supplement

We adapt Takahashi's modified spin-wave theory to the context of nano-magnets, and apply it to the molecular compound based on the giant magnetic molecule Mo72Fe30. This involves solving numerically the mean-field equations and then forcing the sublattice magnetizations to zero by means of local chemical potentials fo…

Magnetism in (Ga,Mn)As Thin Films With TC Up To 173K

K. Y. Wang2005-01-01AIP conference proceedings

We have investigated the magnetic properties of (Ga,Mn)As thin films with Mn concentration between 1 and 9%. Ferromagnetic transition temperatures TC of up to 173K are observed. The results are compared to the predictions of the Zener mean‐field theory. We find no evidence of a fundamental limit to TC.

We apply periodic density functional theory to alpha-MoO3 and its (010) surface. The formation energy and structure of defects in the form of surface oxygen vacancies are found to depend critically on the treatment of electron localisation which is achieved in the periodic model using the DFT + U method. Calculated vi…
