Abstract Two families of electrically‐conductive immiscible polymer blends were studied as liquid sensing materials for an homologous series of alcohols. The systems studied include: multiphase matrices [containing carbon black (CB)] consisting of either polypropylene or high‐impact polystyrene as the major phase and…
Spin doctored: In reactions with phenolate anions, the (tetraisopropylcyclopentadienyl)iron fragment forms low-spin or high-spin iron(II) complexes with different coordination geometries. The lithium complex 1 allows a direct comparison of low-spin and high-spin cyclopentadienyliron fragments within one molecule.
The study of the temperature-dependent Raman spectra of n -alkanes from the solid through melting and in the melt phase reveals that short intermolecular correlation can occur in the melt forming at T m and just above T m a sizable concentration of extended trans C−C bonds sequences. The mean length of these trans seq…
Extremely small amounts of codoping La and Ga on the A and B sites of BaTiO3, respectively, resulting in a solid solution of the type Ba1−3xLa2xGa4xTi1−3xO3, have been investigated. The compounds have been prepared by conventional solid-state reaction. The x-ray diffraction (XRD) shows the presence of the tetragonal (…
This work presents a study of the adhesion energy between carbon nanotube-polyethylene matrix based on molecular dynamics simulations. Specifically, the study focuses on the influence of carbon nanotube chirality on adhesion energy. It is observed that composites that utilize nanotubes with smaller chiral angles achie…
A two-step route is presented to dope Ga into ZnO nanowires and also fabricate heterostructures of Ga-doped ZnO nanowires on ZnO. The content of Ga in ZnO nanowires is about 7 at. % from energy-dispersive x-ray analysis. The single crystal Ga doped ZnO nanowires with the diameter of 40 nm and the length of 300–500 nm…
Abstract The recent advance in soft solution processing of inorganic materials offers an exciting opportunity to develop large‐area manufacturing technologies for inorganic thin‐film transistors (TFTs). In this paper, we report our recent progress in fabricating CdS TFTs using chemical bath deposition (CBD) to deposit…
Silver nanodisks, having two different sizes, and spherical particles are synthesized by soft chemistry. By using centrifugation, nanodisks are mainly selected. The experimental absorption spectra of these nanodisks with different sizes are compared to those simulated using the discrete dipole approximation method. Fo…
Phosphorus-containing poly(N-arylaniline)s and related polymer model compounds have been prepared. The spectroscopic and electronic properties of the materials were investigated via UV-vis-NIR spectroscopy and cyclic voltammetry. PPPP-PANI copolymers containing p-phenylene diamine units in the polymer backbone have el…
Extremely small amounts of La and Al doping on the A and B site of BaTiO3, respectively, resulting in a solid solution of the type Ba1–3xLa2xTi1–3xAl4xO3 have been investigated. The compositions have been prepared by the Pechini process. The x-ray diffraction (XRD) reveals the presence of tetragonal (P4∕mmm) phase. Th…
As part of ongoing research efforts to discover alternative support materials to polymer beads for use in polymer-supported synthesis, particularly under flow-through conditions, this work involves the synthesis of PolyHIPE (High Internal Phase Emulsion) polymer monoliths. PolyHIPEs containing high loadings of chlorom…
In this work, an attempt has been made to modify the shape and nanostructure of core-shell materials, which have been usually generated on the basis of amorphous spherical cores. Novel core-shell silicate particles, each of which consists of a silicalite-1 zeolite crystal core and mesoporous shell (ZCMS), were synthes…
Abstract Composites consisting of a polypropylene (PP) and highly crystalline cellulosic microfibers were prepared by melting mixing with the maleic anhydride grafted polypropylene (MAPP) as a compatibilizer. The results show that even with addition of a small amount of MAPP, the mechanical properties of the composite…
Using a first-principles-based scheme, we determine the qualitative and quantitative effects of surface∕interface, thickness and electrical boundary conditions on the temperature-misfit strain phase diagrams of epitaxial (001) BaTiO3 ultrathin films. The microscopic reasons leading to such effects are also revealed.
Abstract In the Affordable Composites from Renewable Resources (ACRES) program at the University of Delaware, soybean oil and other plant triglycerides have been made amenable to polymerization using a broad range of chemical routes. The resultant polymers range in properties from soft rubbers to hard thermosets for c…
Temperature-dependent photoluminescence (PL) of nanocrystalline ZnO thin films grown on Si (100) substrates using a sol–gel method has been investigated. From the PL spectra measured in 83–293K, the excitonic emissions and their multiple-phonon replicas have been observed in ultraviolet region, and their origins have…
The electronic structures of complexes of iron containing two S,S'-coordinated benzene-1,2-dithiolate, (L)(2)(-), or 3,5-di-tert-butyl-1,2-benzenedithiolate, (L(Bu))(2)(-), ligands have been elucidated in depth by electronic absorption, infrared, X-band EPR, and Mossbauer spectroscopies. It is conclusively shown that,…
Abstract Vanadium pentoxide films were prepared by pulsed laser deposition (PLD) and their surface structure evolution in relation to the growth temperature and as a function of lithium intercalation was studied. The deposition was made onto various substrate materials over a wide substrate temperature range of 30–500…
