The failure of warp yarns on a loom is often caused by repeated cyclical elongation at small stresses well below the breaking point applied under static load. The phenom enon, commonly known as fatigue, is caused by the gradually diminishing resistance of the material, attributable to cumulative damage. Generally, the…

The equiaxed solidification of eutectic alloys is modelled by a probablistic method. The volume of the specimen is divided into a regular network of cubic cells and the temperature is assumed to be uniform. The temperature of the specimen is calculated in a time-stepping scheme from a simple heat balance and a knowled…

Abstract Blends of poly(aryl ether ketones) (PAEKs) and an amorphous poly(ether imide) (PEI) were used as model systems to study the broadening of the glass transition due to crystallization and the resulting depletion of PAEK from the amorphous phase. Two different PAEKs were studied, which are completely miscible wi…

Abstract Polyamide samples were heated under vacuum or mixed in a Brabender plastograph. UV absorbance, chain end concentration, and molecular weight were studied. Postcondensation was observed for polyamide heated under vacuum. For polyamide samples mixed in the plastograph, atmosphere, shear rate, and temperature ch…

Abstract A salt of H3PW12O40, Cs2.5H0.5PW12O40, catalyzed efficiently the skeletal isomerization of n-butane to isobutane at 300 °C. The activity and selectivity were much higher than those of SO22−/ZrO2. H-ZSM-5 was more active than Cs2.5H0.5PW12O40, but the selectivity was very low.

The densification of Al 2 O 3 –30TiC (in weight percent) composite is investigated as a function of Y 2 O 3 additions. It is observed that very small amounts of Y 2 O 3 are effective in aiding the densification. The density was observed to pass through a maximum at 0.35 wt% of Y 2 O 3 . The gas‐generating reaction of…

The advantage of fast firing depends not only on the finer grain‐size effect at the sintering temperature, but also on the smaller pore‐size effect which results from the restricted pore growth. Pore growth due to the differential sintering during heating was observed to occur at relatively low temperature regions, an…
