A New Series of Icosahedral Quasicrystals in Zn-M-Sc (M = Ag, Au, Pd, Pt) Alloys

Shiro Kashimoto、Ryo Maezawa、Yoko Kasano 等 5 位作者2003-10-08Japanese Journal of Applied Physics

A new series of icosahedral quasicrystals has been found in Zn 75 M 10 Sc 15 (M = Ag, Au, Pd and Pt) as-cast alloys. Electron and powder X-ray diffraction analyses indicated that these quasicrystals are of the P-type (primitive type) and have six-dimensional lattice parameters a 6D =0.7112–0.7151 nm. The quasicrystals…

Hae Jin Kim、Hyun Chul Lee、Chang Houn Rhee 等 7 位作者2003-10-08Journal of the American Chemical Society

We revealed the first example of a crystalline lithium aluminate nanotube with thermal stability prepared by a surfactant-driven hydrothermal procedure. The obtained nanotube showed an interesting structure unknown thus far for oxide nanotubes such as cylindrical bundles of lithium aluminate subnanotubules. These nove…

Chiral magnets exhibit two important optical properties: intrinsic optical activity and the Faraday effect. Two‐dimensional chiral magnets reveal these effects at higher critical temperatures than their one‐dimensional counterparts. On page 4810 ff., K. Inoue and co‐workers describe the structure and magnetic properti…

Maximum norms of random sums and transient pattern formation

Thomas Wanner2003-10-08Transactions of the American Mathematical Society

Many interesting and complicated patterns in the applied sciences are formed through transient pattern formation processes. In this paper we concentrate on the phenomenon of spinodal decomposition in metal alloys as described by the Cahn-Hilliard equation. This model depends on a small parameter, and one is generally…

Investigation of the role of plasma conditions on the deposition rate and electrochromic performance of tungsten oxide thin films

Michael T. Seman、Colin A. Wolden2003-10-08Journal of Vacuum Science & Technology A Vacuum Surfaces and Films

Plasma-enhanced chemical vapor deposition has been used to form electrochromic tungsten oxide thin films from gas mixtures of WF6, O2, and H2. The chemistry of this system was investigated using optical emission spectroscopy. The plasma composition and deposition rate were examined as a function of operating condition…

Crystal structure of the dimeric unswapped form of bovine seminal ribonuclease

Rita Berisio、Filomena Sica、Claudia De Lorenzo 等 7 位作者2003-10-08FEBS Letters

Bovine seminal ribonuclease is a unique case of protein dimorphism, since it exists in two dimeric forms, with different biological and kinetic behavior, which interconvert into one another through three-dimensional swapping. Here we report the crystal structure, at 2.2 A resolution, of the unswapped form of bovine se…

Influence of the Transport Properties of the Crystal/Heat Transfer Surface Interfacial on Fouling Behavior

Matthias Bohnet2003-10-08Chemical Engineering & Technology

Abstract One method to reduce fouling is to extend the induction time by a defined modification of the interfacial interactions between the heat transfer surface and the crystalline deposit. Since these interactions are a result of both molecular and mechanical forces, two approaches for fouling mitigation have been d…

Use of AFM to probe the adsorption strength and time‐dependent changes of albumin on self‐assembled monolayers

C. Dupont-Gillain、Christine M.-J. Fauroux、David C. Gardner 等 4 位作者2003-10-08Journal of Biomedical Materials Research Part A

The adsorption kinetics of human serum albumin (HSA) on CH3- and COOH-terminated self-assembled monolayers (SAMs) has been investigated using radioassays and atomic force microscopy (AFM). On both surfaces, the amount of HSA adsorbed reached a plateau after 30 min. The plateau level was higher on the CH3 compared to t…

Nucleobase‐induced supramolecular polymerization in the solid state

Stuart J. Rowan、Phiriyatorn Suwanmala、Sona Sivakova2003-10-08Journal of Polymer Science Part A Polymer Chemistry

Abstract Supramolecular polymerization, that is, the self‐assembly of polymer‐like materials through the utilization of the noncovalent bond, has been a developing area of research over the last decade. In this article, we report the synthesis of nucleobase‐terminated ( N 6 ‐anisoyl‐adenine and thymine) low‐molecular‐…

Bhanu Nandan、L. D. Kandpal、G. N. Mathur2003-10-08Journal of Applied Polymer Science

Abstract Mechanical properties such as the tensile modulus, yield (break) strength, and elongation to break (or yield) are measured for multiphase poly(ether ether ketone) (PEEK)/poly(aryl ether sulfone) (PES) blends. Specimens with three different levels of thermal histories (quenched, as‐molded, and annealed) are pr…

Mohammad A. Islam、Yuqi Xia、Michael L. Steigerwald 等 8 位作者2003-10-08Nano Letters

Electrophoretic deposition from mixtures of CdSe and γ-Fe 2 O 3 nanocrystals forms identical films on the positive and negative electrodes composed of both types of nanocrystals. In contrast, the electrophoretic deposition from mixtures of CdSe and Au nanocrystals forms films composed of only CdSe nanocrystals, and th…

A Thiazyl‐Based Organic Ferromagnet

Antonio Alberola、Robert J. Less、Christopher M. Pask 等 10 位作者2003-10-08Angewandte Chemie International Edition

The sulfur–nitrogen radical p-O2NC6F4CNSSN. (see packing diagram) provides a rare example of an organic radical that orders ferromagnetically above 1 K. It is suggested that the near orthogonal nature of the singly occupied molecular orbitals of neighboring molecules is important for such behavior to be observed.
