Lining them up: Purely organic paramagnetic liquid crystals (see picture) showing thermally stable nematic or cholesteric phases were successfully prepared. The molecular orientation of the bulk liquid crystals induced by weak magnetic fields was confirmed by magnetic susceptibility measurements and EPR spectroscopy.

Abstract The photo‐oxidative degradation of polyethylene/montmorillonite (PE/MMT) nanocomposite and microcomposite has been investigated. It has been found that the rate of photo‐oxidative degradation of PE/MMT nanocomposite and PE/M n+ MMT (where M n+ stands for multivalent transition metal cation) microcomposites is…

We use inelastic neutron scattering and molecular dynamics simulation to investigate the interplay between the structure and the fast sodium ion diffusion in various sodium silicates. With increasing temperature and decreasing density the structure factors exhibit an emerging prepeak around 0.9 A(-1). We show that thi…

The only kinetically relevant step for catalytic CH4 activation on Ir clusters is—according to a detailed analysis—CH bond activation (see picture). This step is favored on surfaces of small Ir clusters supported on oxides, as also found on other noble metal catalysts. Other elementary steps remove chemisorbed carbon…

We proposed an approach to precisely control the density of tethered chains on solid substrates using PEO-b-PS and PLLA-b-PS. As the crystallization temperature ${T}_{x}$ increased, the PEO or PLLA lamellar crystal thickness ${d}_{L}$ increased as well as the reduced tethering density $\stackrel{\texttildelow{}}{\ensu…

Ultra-low friction between shells of multiwalled carbon nanotubes indicates that, when the nanotubes are used as reinforcement agents, the mechanical load is carried by the outermost shell of the tube only. We suggest using small-dose electron or ion irradiation to partially transfer the load to the nanotube inner she…

A series of first principles calculations have been carried out in order to discuss electronic structure, phonon dynamics, structural instabilities and the nature of martensitic transformations of the Heusler alloys Ni$_2$Mn(Ga, Ge, Al) and Co$_2$Mn(Ga, Ge). The calculations show that besides electronic pecularities l…

Ta films with tetragonal crystalline structure (beta-phase), deposited by magnetron sputtering on different substrates (steel, silicon and silicon dioxide), have been studied. In all cases, very highly preferred (001) orientation was observed in x-ray diffraction (XRD) measurements. All diffraction data revealed two w…

Replacing U for Ca in semiconducting CaB$_6$ at the few at.% level induces metallic behaviour and Kondo-type phenomena at low temperatures, a rather unusual feature for U impurities in metallic hosts. For Ca$_{0.992}$U$_{0.008}$B$_6$, the resistance minimum occurs at $T$ = 17 K. The subsequent characteristic logarithm…

We investigate the localization property of an electron in the disordered two-chain system (ladder model) with long-range correlation as a simple model for electronic property in DNA sequence. The chains are constructed by repetition of the sugar-phosphate sites, and the inter-chain hopping at the sugar sites come fro…

A simple model of inelastic hard-rods subject to a one-dimensional array of identical wells is introduced. The energy loss due to inelastic collisions is balanced by the work supplied by an external stochastic heat-bath. We explore the effect of the spatial non uniformity on the steady states of the system. The spatia…

Monte Carlo simulations are used to study the magnetic relaxation of a system of single domain particles with dipolar interactions modeled by a chain of Heisenberg classical spins. We show that the so-called $T\ln(t/τ_0)$ method can be extended to interacting systems and how, from the computed master relaxation curves…
