We use spatially resolved micro-PL imaging at low temperature to study optical properties of two sets of CdS nanowires grown using 20 nm and 50 nm catalysts. We find that low temperature PL of single nanowires is an ideal technique to gauge the quality of a given growth run, and moreover enables the collection of deta…

We calculate the P-shell--to-S-shell decay lifetime τ(P->S) of electrons in lens-shaped self-assembled (In,Ga)As/GaAs dots due to Auger electron-hole scattering within an atomistic pseudopotential-based approach. We find that this relaxation mechanism leads to fast decay of τ(P->S)~1-7 ps for dots of different sizes.…

We find that nearly monodisperse copper oxide nanoparticles prepared via the thermal decomposition of a Cu(I) precursor exhibit exceptional activity toward CO oxidation in CO/O2/N2 mixtures. Greater than 99.5% conversion of CO to CO2 could be achieved at temperatures less than 250 degrees C for over 12 h. In addition,…

The development of printed and flexible (opto)electronics requires specific materials for the device's electrodes. Those materials must satisfy a combination of properties. They must be electrically conducting, transparent, printable, and flexible. The conducting polymer poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene)− poly(styrenes…

Within a tight-binding approach we investigate how the electronic structure evolves from a single graphene layer into bulk graphite by computing the band structure of one, two, and three layers of graphene. It is well known that a single graphene layer is a zero-gap semiconductor with a linear Dirac-like spectrum arou…

Nephrogenic systemic fibrosis is a new, rare disease of unknown cause that affects patients with renal failure. Single cases led to the suspicion of a causative role of gadodiamide that is used for magnetic resonance imaging. This study therefore reviewed all of the authors' confirmed cases of nephrogenic systemic fib…

The adsorption and the growth of ZnO on -Al2O3(0001) surface at various temperatures were theoretically calculated by using a plane wave pseudopotentials (USP) method based on density functional theory. The average adsorption energy of ZnO at 400, 600 and 800 C is 4.160.08, 4.250.11 and 4.050.23 eV respectively. Tempe…

Two-nanosecond molecular dynamics simulations of the crystal lattice of an active complex of pT160-CDK2 kinase/cyclin A/ATP-Mg 2+ /substrate were performed. The simulations showed that the structures of the wild-type CDK2 complex and the mutant CDK2 complex involving the substitution G16S-CDK2 corresponding to the yea…
