A Mixture-Induced Nematic Phase

B. Ziemnicka、A. de Vries、J. W. Doane 等 4 位作者1986-02-01Molecular crystals and liquid crystals

We report on an unusual variant in liquid crystal polymorphism where a nematic phase is created from a binary mixture of two compounds, neither one of which in its pure state exhibits the nematic phase. One of the compounds in its pure form exhibits only a smectic A phase which is stabilized by an extended alkyl chain…

The cylindrical or tubiliform glands of Nephila clavipes

Graciela C. Candelas、Anselmo Ortiz、Carlos Molina1986-02-01Journal of Experimental Zoology

The cylindrical or tubiliform glands of the spider Nephila clavipes have been studied and compared to the large ampullates on which we have previously reported. The three pairs of cylindrical or tubiliform glands secrete the fibroin for the organism's egg case. Their solubilized luminar contents migrate as a homogeneo…

Cotton Blend Fabrics from Polyester Core Yarns

Robert J. Harper、George F. Ruppenicker、D. J. Donaldson1986-02-01Textile Research Journal

Core spun yarns with a filament core and a cotton wrap were prepared and made into fabrics. The properties of these yarns and fabrics in comparison with all-cotton and intimate staple blend controls were investigated. This study included the dyeing of these fabrics and finishing for smooth drying and flame retardancy.

A New Impregnant for HV Power Capacitors

N. Berger、P.R. Jay1986-02-01IEEE Transactions on Electrical Insulation

The main properties of a newly developed impregnant ant for high voltage power capacitors are given. This new liquid, a mono dibenzyltoluene blend (M/DBT), has a very high degree of aromaticity. The results of many tests carried out both on model and large capacitors are reported. A screening test using a transparent…

Plastic deformation of crystalline polymers

A. N. Gent、Jongkoo Jeong1986-02-01Polymer Engineering and Science

Abstract Draw ratios have been measured for samples of polyethylene and trons ‐polyisoprene, crystallized at various temperatures and at various degrees of orientation. The values obtained range from unity, i. e., no drawing is observed, up to values of about 15X for materials crystallized in the oriented state and th…

Correlation of Mixed Layer Growth in a Double-Diffusive, Salt-Stratified System Heated From Below

T. L. Bergman、F. P. Incropera、R. Viskanta1986-02-01ASME Journal of Heat and Mass Transfer

Although many mixed layer growth correlations have been developed for stratified solutions which are eroded by mechanically driven mixed layers, little has been done to determine their applicability to solutions for which erosion is thermally driven. In this study entrainment rates have been determined from measuremen…

Influence of Citric and Tannic Acids on Hydroxy-Al Interlayering in Montmorillonite

Tee Boon Goh、Pan Huang1986-02-01Clays and Clay Minerals

Abstract The formation of hydroxy-Al-interlayered montmorillonite was affected by complexing organic acids. Montmorillonite (<2.0 μ m) was aged for three months at an initial pH of 5.0 or 6.0 in AlCl 3 solutions containing citric or tannic acid at organic acid/Al molar ratios from 0 to 1.0. The Al/clay ratio in the…

Effects of heterogeneous sink distribution on void swelling

T. Leffers、B.N. Singh、A. V. Volobuyev 等 4 位作者1986-02-01Philosophical magazine. A/Philosophical magazine. A. Physics of condensed matter. Structure, defects and mechanical properties

Swelling rates are calculated for two types of material with heterogeneous distributions of dislocations and voids, namely copper irradiated with neutrons to low dose at 250°C and heavily cold-worked copper irradiated with 1 MeV electrons in a HVEM at 250°C. Both materials are considered to consist of non-interacting…

Surface enhanced resonance Raman study on fluorescein dyes

Peter Hildebrandt、Manfred Stockburger1986-02-01Journal of Raman Spectroscopy

Abstract Fluorescein and its derivatives fluoresceinamine and diiodofluoresceiniodoacetamide have been studied by surface enhanced resonance Raman spectroscopy (SERRS). Adsorption of the dyes at the silver/electrolyte interface requires attractive interactions between polar side groups (such as NH 2 , OH and COOH) wit…

Reaction-enhanced sintering of platinum thin films during ethylene oxidation

Nae Lih Wu、Jonathan Phillips1986-02-01Journal of Applied Physics

The sintering of sputter-produced, silica-supported platinum thin films was studied using electron microscopy and x-ray diffraction following treatments in both reactive (ethylene oxidation—O2+C2H4) and nonreactive atmospheres (vacuum, O2, N2, C2H4, CO2, H2O). Sintering behavior in nonreactive atmospheres (thermal sin…

Differential excitation cross section of atomic oxygen by electron impact: (³P‐¹D transition)

T. W. Shyn、William E. Sharp1986-02-01Journal of Geophysical Research Atmospheres

Absolute differential excitation cross sections of atomic oxygen (³P‐¹D transition) by electron impact have been measured by a crossed‐beam method. Atomic oxygen was generated by a thermal dissociation method. The energy and angular range covered were from 7 to 30 eV and from 30° to 150°, respectively. A few theoretic…

Superplastic deformation characteristics of microduplex Ti–6Al–4V alloy

M. T. Cope、N. Ridley1986-02-01Materials Science and Technology

A study has been made of the superplastic tensile behaviour of a microduplex Ti–6AI–4V alloy in the temperature range 760–940°C. Maximum superplastic elongations were obtained for a temperature of 880°C at which the volume fraction of β–phase was approximately 0·4. At temperatures below about 850°C, the main microstru…
