Luminescent nanophase europium-doped ZrO 2 precursors are subjected to pyroprobe heating with nominal heating rates of 20 000 °C/s for 1 and 10 s to various temperatures. When heated above the crystallization temperature, the material forms tetragonal and monoclinic polymorphs. Optical spectroscopy is used to measure…

Abstract Sisal fiber (SF)‐reinforced poly(lactic acid) (PLA) biocomposites were prepared from biodegradable PLA and surface‐untreated or ‐treated short SF by melt mixing and subsequent compression molding. It is found that the surface treatments facilitate good adhesion between SFs and PLA matrix, which is consistent…

A simple method to fabricate centimeter-sized thin films of graphene oxide (GO) is developed via drying the relative liquid film supported by a rigid frame. After reduction, centimeter-sized thin reduced GO films are obtained, and the maximum transparency is 75.8% while the minimum sheet resistance is 920 Ω □(-1) .

Ferromagnetic thin films of the A-site nano-ordered double perovskite LaBaCo(2)O(5.5+δ) (LBCO) were grown on (001) MgO, and their structural and magnetic properties were characterized. The as-grown films have an excellent epitaxial behavior with atomically sharp interfaces, with the c-axis of the LBCO structure lying…

Many anticancer drugs have been established clinically, but their efficacy can be compromised by nonspecific toxicity and an inability to reach the desired cancerous intracellular spaces. In order to address these issues, researchers have explored the use of folic acid as a targeted moiety to increase specificity of c…

Recent simulations predict that aggregating nanospheres functionalized with polymer "tethers" can self-assemble to form a cylinder, perforated lamellae, lamellae, and even the double gyroid phase, which are phases also seen in block copolymer and surfactant systems. Nanoparticle size polydispersity is likely to be a c…

The effects of the lattice strain induced by neutral oxygen vacancies in ferroelectric tetragonal BaTiO(3) and KNbO(3) are investigated using ab initio simulations. We propose that an oxygen vacancy can transform from its metastable equatorial configuration to the stable axial configuration via either diffusion or rot…

Molecular magnets Cu(hfac)(2)L(R) represent a new type of photoswitchable materials based on exchange-coupled clusters of copper(II) with stable nitroxide radicals. It was found recently that the photoinduced spin state of these compounds is metastable on the time scale of hours at cryogenic temperatures, similar to t…

Carbon-based fullerene-like (FL) solid compounds are a new class of materials with extraordinary mechanical properties, which can be tuned by the dopant choice and its concentration. In this work, FL sulfocarbide (CS x ) was studied by DFT simulations during synthetic growth with C m S n ( m, n ≤ 2). The energetic and…

Abstract The defect structures for Gd‐ and La‐doping on the A‐site of BaTiO3 with the creation of Ti vacancies are reported. The rare‐earth cations cluster together around the vacancy. The local relaxations caused by the defect cluster lead to distortion and tilting of nearby TiO6 octahedra and this is responsible for…
