Dielectric and piezoelectric properties of microwave sintered PZT

Pramod K. Sharma、Zoubeida Ounaies、V. V. Varadan 等 4 位作者2001-08-30Smart Materials and Structures

In this paper, the dielectric and piezoelectric properties of sol-gel derived and microwave sintered PZT are presented. It has been observed that the microwave sintering results in a material with a higher dielectric constant (≈1600) than that sintered by conventional methods (≈1480). It also offers a low dielectric l…

Design and Synthesis of Porphyrins Bearing Rigid Hydrogen Bonding Motifs: Highly Versatile Building Blocks for Self-Assembly of Polymers and Discrete Arrays

Xinxu Shi、Kathleen M. Barkigia、J. Fajer 等 4 位作者2001-08-30The Journal of Organic Chemistry

Two aldehydes, 2,6-diacetamido-4-formylpyridine (7) and 1-butyl-6-formyluracil (11), are used to synthesize five pyridyl and four uracyl meso-subsituted porphyrins. With these complementary porphyrin building blocks, it is possible to build various types of multi-porphyrin supramolecules with different spatial relatio…

Simplified equations for correction parameters for elastic scattering effects in AES and XPS for Q , β and attenuation lengths

M. P. Seah、Ian S. Gilmore2001-08-30Surface and Interface Analysis

Abstract In this work we develop simple equations, suitable for the analyst, based on the Monte Carlo calculations of Jablonski, for the corrections arising from elastic scattering. These concern modification of the angular anisotropy in XPS and the absolute intensities in both Auger electron spectroscopy (AES) and x‐…

Preparation of a Solid Superacid of Sulfated Tin Oxide with Acidity Higher Than That of Sulfated Zirconia and Its Applications to Aldol Condensation and Benzoylation1

Hiromi Matsuhashi、Hidenori Miyazaki、Yuuki Kawamura 等 5 位作者2001-08-30Chemistry of Materials

A highly active solid superacid of sulfated tin oxide was prepared from tin oxide gel, which was precipitated by the hydrolysis of SnCl 4 and washed with aqueous ammonium acetate solution, followed by exposure to aqueous sulfuric acid and calcining. Differencial thermal analysis suggested that the acetate ion remainin…

Stokes drag of spherical particles in a nematic environment at low Ericksen numbers

Holger Stark、Dieter Ventzki2001-08-30Physical review. E, Statistical physics, plasmas, fluids, and related interdisciplinary topics

As a first approach to the motion of particles in anisotropic liquids, we study the Stokes drag of spherical particles in three different nematic environments: a uniform director field, the Saturn-ring configuration, and the dipole configuration. Two independent friction coefficients for the respective motion parallel…

Antisite defects and magnetoresistance in Sr2FeMoO6double perovskite

J. Navarro、Ll. Balcells、F. Sandiumenge 等 7 位作者2001-08-30Journal of Physics Condensed Matter

We report a detailed study of the magnetic and magnetotransport properties of Sr 2 FeMoO 6 ceramics having a controlled concentration of antisite (AS) defects. It is found that a high-field differential susceptibility exists in all samples, which increases with AS. Similarly, a high-field magnetoresistivity develops a…

Shell-Tunneling Spectroscopy of the Single-Particle Energy Levels of Insulating Quantum Dots

Erik P. A. M. Bakkers、Zeger Hens、Alex Zunger 等 7 位作者2001-08-30Nano Letters

The energy levels of CdSe quantum dots are studied by scanning tunneling spectroscopy. By varying the tip−dot distance, we switch from “shell-filling” spectroscopy (where electrons accumulate in the dot and experience mutual repulsion) to “shell-tunneling” spectroscopy (where electrons tunnel, one at a time, through t…

Some methodological problems concerning nonisothermal kinetic analysis of heterogeneous solid–gas reactions

P. Budrugeac、E. Segal2001-08-30International Journal of Chemical Kinetics

Abstract Isoconversional methods, those using only one curve α = α(T) (α is the conversion degree and T is the temperature), and invariant kinetic parameter method were applied to estimate the kinetic parameters from the following nonisothermal data: (1) simulated TG curves for a single reaction; (2) TG curves for the…

Collectivity in the optical response of small metal clusters

S. Kümmel、K. Andrae、P. -G. Reinhard2001-08-30arXiv

The question whether the linear absorption spectra of metal clusters can be interpreted as density oscillations (collective ``plasmons'') or can only be understood as transitions between distinct molecular states is still a matter of debate for clusters with only a few electrons. We calculate the photoabsorption spect…

The effect of disorder on the fracture nucleation process

S. Ciliberto、A. Guarino、R. Scorretti2001-08-30arXiv

The statistical properties of failure are studied in a fiber bundle model with thermal noise. We show that the macroscopic failure is produced by a thermal activation of microcracks. Most importantly the effective temperature of the system is amplified by the spatial disorder (heterogeneity) of the fiber bundle. The c…

Theory of High \tc Ferromagnetism in $SrB_6$ family: A case of Doped Spin-1 Mott insulator in a Valence Bond Solid Phase

G. Baskaran2001-08-30arXiv

Doped divalent hexaborides such as $Sr_{1-x}La_xB_6$ exhibit high \tc ferromagnetism. We isolate a degenerate pair of $2p$-orbitals of boron with two valence electrons, invoke electron correlation and Hund coupling, to suggest that the undoped state is better viewed as a spin-1 Mott insulator; it is predicted to be a…

Uniform and nonuniform textures of a nematic liquid crystal in contact with an inhomogeneous substrate

Svyatoslav Kondrat、A. Poniewierski2001-08-29Physical review. E, Statistical physics, plasmas, fluids, and related interdisciplinary topics

A semi-infinite sample of a nematic liquid crystal in contact with a flat solid substrate, possessing an alternating stripe pattern of planar and homeotropic anchoring, is studied in the framework of the Frank-Oseen model. The case of strong anchoring on one of the stripes is treated by means of bifurcation analysis,…

Size-Dependent Solubility of Thiol-Derivatized Gold Nanoparticles in Supercritical Ethane

Nicola Z. Clarke、Cecilia A. Waters、Kathleen A. Johnson 等 5 位作者2001-08-29Langmuir

It is shown that alkane thiol-capped gold nanoparticles can be dissolved in supercritical ethane. Importantly, the solubility was found to be dependent on the core diameter thus allowing separation by size. Nanoparticles with a core diameter less than 1.7 nm were soluble in the supercritical fluid.
