Solubilization of Single‐Walled Carbon Nanotubes by using Polycyclic Aromatic Ammonium Amphiphiles in Water—Strategy for the Design of High‐Performance Solubilizers

Yasuhiko Tomonari、Hiroto Murakami、Naotoshi Nakashima2006-03-21Chemistry - A European Journal

We describe the design of polycyclic aromatic compounds with high performance that dissolve single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWNTs). Synthetic amphiphiles trimethyl-(2-oxo-2-phenylethyl)-ammonium bromide (1) and trimethyl-(2-naphthalen-2-yl-2-oxo-ethyl)-ammonium bromide (2) carrying a phenyl or a naphtyl moiety were no…

Continuous Distribution of Emission States from Single CdSe/ZnS Quantum Dots

Kai Zhang、Hauyee Chang、Aihua Fu 等 5 位作者2006-03-21Nano Letters

The photoluminescence dynamics of colloidal CdSe/ZnS/streptavidin quantum dots were studied using time-resolved single-molecule spectroscopy. Statistical tests of the photon-counting data suggested that the simple "on/off" discrete state model is inconsistent with experimental results. Instead, a continuous emission s…

The bactericidal effect of TiO2 photocatalysis involves adsorption onto catalyst and the loss of membrane integrity

Gaà tan Gogniat、Mélilotus Thyssen、Michel Denis 等 5 位作者2006-03-21FEMS Microbiology Letters

The bactericidal effect of photocatalysis with TiO2 is well recognized, although its mode of action is still poorly characterized. It may involve oxidation, as illuminated TiO2 generates reactive oxygen species. Here we analyze the bactericidal effect of illuminated TiO2 in NaCl-KCl or sodium phosphate solutions. We f…

Intracellular uptake and degradation of polyelectrolyte capsules is reported in this work. Two types of intracellular degradable capsules are described: enzyme-sensitive and hydrolysis- sensitive capsules (see figure). The results may be a significant step towards the biomedical application of polyelectrolyte capsules.

Bouncing transitions on microtextured materials

Mathilde Reyssat、A. Pépin、Frédéric Marty 等 5 位作者2006-03-21OpenAlex

A drop of water thrown on a super-hydrophobic solid will often bounce off. Here we discuss the conditions to be fulfilled on the surface design (which provides super-hydrophobicity) to observe such a behavior. This allows us to precise how a material can be made water-repellent. We show in particular how the reduction…

Enhancement and Quenching of Single-Molecule Fluorescence

Pascal Anger、Palash Bharadwaj、Lukáš Novotný2006-03-21OpenAlex

We present an experimental and theoretical study of the fluorescence rate of a single molecule as a function of its distance to a laser-irradiated gold nanoparticle. The local field enhancement leads to an increased excitation rate whereas nonradiative energy transfer to the particle leads to a decrease of the quantum…

The spectra of collective excitations of liquid and glassy tellurium have been studied by means of inelastic neutron scattering. Here we report on the dynamics of liquid Te as measured at two different temperatures, just above melting $({T}_{m}=723\phantom{\rule{0.3em}{0ex}}\mathrm{K})$ and at $\ensuremath{\sim}1000\p…

Fabrication and characterization of epitaxial Ba_07Sr_03TiO_3 thin films for optical waveguide applications

Dan-Yang Wang、H.L.W. Chan、Chung Loong Choy2006-03-20Applied Optics

The optical properties of barium strontium titanate (Ba0.7Sr0.3TiO3; BST) thin films are described. The BST thin films were epitaxially grown upon MgO (001) substrates by pulsed laser deposition. The crystallographic properties of the BST thin films were examined by x-ray diffraction. The BST thin films were highly op…

Polarization dependent Bragg diffraction and electro-optic switching of three-dimensional assemblies of nematic liquid crystal droplets

Alberto Fernández‐Nieves、Darren R. Link、David A. Weitz2006-03-20Applied Physics Letters

We report the fabrication of three-dimensional lattices of bipolar nematic liquid crystal droplets. The electro-optic properties of these materials consist of transitions between opaque, Bragg diffracting, and transparent states. These occur continuously at moderate electric (E) fields through bipolar axis rotation of…

Synchronous toughening and reinforcing of polypropylene with ultrahigh‐molecular‐weight polyethylene via melt blending: Mechanical properties, morphology, and rheology

Xiaodong Wang、Hangquan Li、Riguang Jin2006-03-20Journal of Applied Polymer Science

Abstract Blending systems based on polypropylene (PP) and ultrahigh‐molecular‐weight polyethylene (UHMWPE) were prepared via a melt extrusion by the four‐screw and the twin‐screw extruders, respectively. The mechanical evaluation demonstrated that the synchronous toughening and reinforcing effects could be achieved fr…

Thickness-independent memory effect in ferroelectric liquid crystals

S. Kaur、Anil Thakur、Seema Bawa 等 4 位作者2006-03-20Applied Physics Letters

Memory in ferroelectric liquid crystals (FLCs) is well known in the literature where thickness of the cell is less than the pitch value of the material. Here, we report a thickness independent memory in a class of FLCs called the de Vries electroclinic liquid crystals. Thickness independency of memory effect is observ…

A Nonanuclear Gallium(III) Cluster: An Intermediate in the Formation of Dinuclear Triple‐Stranded Helicates?

Markus Albrecht、Sabrina Dehn、Roland Fröhlich2006-03-20Angewandte Chemie International Edition

What happens in between? A nonanuclear gallium(III) cluster (see structure: white H, gray C, red O, orange Br, beige Ga) is a potential intermediate in the assembly of a dinuclear helicate. The cluster could be isolated because of conformational restrictions at the ligand which disfavor the formation of the triple-str…
