Threshold Pressure for Disappearance of Size-Induced Effect in Spinel-Structure Ge3N4 Nanocrystals

Zhongwu Wang、Yusheng Zhao、David Schiferl 等 7 位作者2003-12-01The Journal of Physical Chemistry B

We demonstrate that the incompressibility of spinel Ge 3 N 4 nanocrystals decreases when the pressure is elevated above ∼20 GPa. Ge 3 N 4 nanocrystals initially exhibit a higher bulk modulus of 381(2) GPa. But, above 20 GPa, the bulk modulus is apparently reduced to 268(4) GPa, which is similar to the reported bulk mo…

Shift of fibril-forming ability of the designed -helical coiled-coil peptides into the physiological pH region

Tatiana N. Melnik、Viviane Villard、V.D. Vasiliev 等 6 位作者2003-12-01Protein Engineering Design and Selection

Recently, we designed a short alpha-helical fibril-forming peptide (alphaFFP) that can form alpha-helical nanofibrils at acid pH. The non-physiological conditions of the fibril formation hamper biomedical application of alphaFFP. It was hypothesized that electrostatic repulsion between glutamic acid residues present a…

METAL-DIELECTRIC COMPOSITE FILTERS WITH CONTROLLED SPECTRAL WINDOWS OF TRANSPARENCY

Dentcho A. Genov、Andrey K. Sarychev、Vladimir M. Shalaev2003-12-01Journal of Nonlinear Optical Physics & Materials

In this report we show the possibility of broadband low-pass filters with windows of transparency in pre-set spectral ranges. Those filters are based on the unique optical properties of metal-dielectric composites near the percolation threshold. In such composites, metal clusters of different sizes and shapes have dif…

Teh-Hwa Wong、Mool C. Gupta、Bruce Robins 等 4 位作者2003-12-01Optics Letters

The wings of the morpho butterfly demonstrate an iridescent blue color over wide viewing angles. The mechanism that generates this blue color is studied. Optical and transmission electron microscopy of the butterfly wings reveal a complex wing structure with as many as 24 layers with periodic structures. The color gen…
