Symmetry breaking and interaction of colloidal particles in nematic liquid crystals

B. I. Lev、S. B. Chernyshuk、P. M. Tomchuk 等 4 位作者2002-01-25Physical review. E, Statistical physics, plasmas, fluids, and related interdisciplinary topics

We propose a general approach to the description of the long-ranged elastic interaction in the nematic colloids, based on the symmetry breaking of the director field. The type of the far-field interaction between particles immersed in a nematic host is determined by the way the symmetry is broken in the near-field reg…

Comparison of density-functional, tight-binding, and empirical methods for the simulation of amorphous carbon

Nigel A. Marks、N C Cooper、David R. McKenzie 等 6 位作者2002-01-25Physical review. B, Condensed matter

Amorphous carbon networks are used to test various levels of theoretical approaches to molecular dynamics simulations. The density-functional theory as implemented in the Car-Parrinello method, nonorthogonal tight-binding method, the environment-dependent interaction potential (EDIP), and the Brenner potential are com…

Magnetic Order in Transition Metal Oxides with Orbital Degrees of Freedom

Andrzej M. Oles2002-01-25arXiv

We investigate the frustrated magnetic interactions in cubic transition metal oxides with orbital degeneracy. The $e_g$ orbitals order easier and their ordering explains the $A$-type antiferromagnetic phase in KCuF$_3$ and LaMnO$_3$. In $t_{2g}$ systems the magnetic order changes at a transition from an orbital liquid…

Degradation of LaMnO{3-y} surface layer in LaMnO{3-y}/ metal interface

A. Plecenik、K. Frohlich、J. P. Espinos 等 7 位作者2002-01-25arXiv

We report electrical measurements showing the degradation processes of LaMnO$_{3-y}$ (LaMnO) in LaMnO/normal metal interface in both point contact and planar-type junctions. Immediately after the preparation of the interface, the degradation process was followed by measuring the evolution of the junction resistance ve…

Dynamic of a non homogeneously coarse grained system

Stefano Curtarolo、Gerbrand Ceder2002-01-25arXiv

To study materials phenomena simultaneously at various length scales, descriptions in which matter can be coarse grained to arbitrary levels, are necessary. Attempts to do this in the static regime (i.e. zero temperature) have already been developed. In this letter, we present an approach that leads to a dynamics for…

Room Temperature Solution Synthesis of Alkyl-Capped Tetrahedral Shaped Silicon Nanocrystals

Richard K. Baldwin、Katherine A. Pettigrew、Jayne C. Garno 等 6 位作者2002-01-25Journal of the American Chemical Society

We report the room temperature solution synthesis of alkyl protected silicon nanocrystals. The nanocrystals are of unusually uniform tetrahedral morphology and of a limited size distribution. The nanocrystals were characterized by transmission and scanning electron microscopy as well as atomic force microscopy.

The effect of annealing on the nonlinear viscoelastic response of isotactic polypropylene

A. D. Drozdov、J. deC. Christiansen2002-01-25arXiv

Three series of tensile relaxation tests are performed on isotactic polypropylene at room temperature in the vicinity of the yield point. In the first series of experiments, injection-molded samples are used without thermal pre-treatment. In the second and third series, prior to testing the specimens are annealed at 1…

Moonsub Shim、Nadine Wong Shi Kam、Robert J. Chen 等 5 位作者2002-01-25OpenAlex

The interface between biological molecules and novel nanomaterials is important to developing new types of miniature devices for biological applications. Here, the streptavidin/biotin system is used to investigate the adsorption behavior of proteins on the sides of single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWNTs). Functionaliza…

A Group-IV Ferromagnetic Semiconductor: Mn x Ge 1− x

Y. D. Park、Aubrey T. Hanbicki、Steven C. Erwin 等 10 位作者2002-01-25OpenAlex

We report on the epitaxial growth of a group-IV ferromagnetic semiconductor, Mn(x)Ge(1-x), in which the Curie temperature is found to increase linearly with manganese (Mn) concentration from 25 to 116 kelvin. The p-type semiconducting character and hole-mediated exchange permit control of ferromagnetic order through a…

Effects of CO2 on the Phenanthrene Adsorption Capacity of Carbonaceous Materials

A.M. Mastral、Tomás García、Ramón Murillo 等 6 位作者2002-01-24Energy & Fuels

Three-ring polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), and phenanthrene (Phe) in particular, are the main pollutants found in the waste flue gases from organic material combustion in energy generation processes. Quantitatively, the most abundant gaseous contaminant emitted in these processes is CO 2 . Therefore, the aim…

29Si NMR Shifts and Relative Stabilities Calculated for Hypercoordinated Silicon−Polyalcohol Complexes: Role in Sol−Gel and Biogenic Silica Synthesis

Nita Sahai、J. A. Tossell2002-01-24Inorganic Chemistry

Penta- and hexa-coordinated silicon is rare, occurring as a transient species in some glasses, nonaqueous organosilicon solutions and organosilicon gels such as silicone, and is stable at high pressures within the earth in dense phases such as stishovite. The stable form expected in aqueous solution is quadra-coordina…

Javier López-Jaramillo、A. B. Moraleda、Luis A. González-Ramírez 等 5 位作者2002-01-24Acta Crystallographica Section D Biological Crystallography

Protein crystals crack when they are soaked in a solution with ionic strength sufficiently different from the environment in which they grew. It is demonstrated for the case of tetragonal lysozyme that the forces involved and the mechanisms that lead to the formation of cracks are different for hypertonic and hypotoni…
