Vitrification of nuclear wastes is attractive because of its flexibility, the large number of elements which can be incorporated in the glass, its high corrosion durability and the reduced volume of the resulting waste form. Vitrification is a mature technology and has been used for high level nuclear waste (HLW) immo…

This review covers main approaches to development of inhibited conversion formulations for chemical oxidation of aluminum alloys. A mechanism explaining the formation of conversion coatings on aluminum alloys from chromate conversion baths is proposed; the protective properties of the resulting coatings are characteri…

The electronic structure of contact between Ti surface and a semiconducting carbon nanotube is investigated by using first-principles method. The nanotube placed on the Ti surface exhibits obvious cross section distortion and strong chemical bonds form between C and Ti. Our results suggest that the nanotube may become…

Abstract Low‐pressure plasmas are known for their ability to synthesize nanoparticles via gas‐phase nucleation. While in the past this particle formation has often been considered from the viewpoint of a contamination problem in semiconductor processing, we here describe a low‐pressure plasma that enables the synthesi…

It is established that magnesium oxide (a nonmagnetic ionic insulator) exhibits a transition to the state of a magnetic half-metal upon the introduction of nonmagnetic impurities (boron, carbon, or nitrogen) into the crystal lattice. The possibility of obtaining novel magnetic materials for spintronics by doping ionic…

Using Stokesian dynamics simulations, the shear-induced diffusivities due to pair collisions of identical spherical or nonspherical particles are considered, with the purpose to evaluate the effects of irreversibility and symmetry breaking. Results are compared to an approximate upper bound found by assuming that the…

Fluorosilane self-assembled monolayers for polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) nanochannels are desirable to control the hydrophobicity of the surface to reduce or prevent undesired protein adsorption or cell interactions, critical for the performance of many biomedical micro-/nanodevices. Surface modifications using vapor ph…

Abstract Pulsed-laser irradiation induced the release of plasmid DNA from conjugates of DNA and gold nanorods (GNRs). Gel electrophoresis indicated that 1% of the plasmid DNA conjugated with GNRs was released from the conjugates. In vitro assay indicated that 0.5% of plasmid DNA was active.

The effects of Co, Fe, Mn, and Ti oxide additions on the sinterability and crystal-chemical, thermal, and electrical properties of Ce 0.8 Gd 0.2 O 2−δ have been studied. The results indicate that these oxides enhance the sinterability of the mixed oxide, regardless of whether they were introduced before or after synth…

We study the phase transition from amorphous to face-centered-cubic (fcc) polycrystalline Ge2Sb2Te5 thin films. The transformation has the peculiar characteristic, still not well understood, of coexisting high transition rates at low annealing temperature (with grain growth velocities of the order of 1nm∕min at 140°C)…
