The frst neutron powder diffraction based atomic pair distribution functions (PDFs) are reported from the new wide angular-range chopper spectrometer ARCS at the Spallation Neutron Source at Oak Ridge National Laboratory. The spectrometer was run in white-beam mode, with no Fermi chopper. The PDF patterns of Si, Ni, a…

X-ray magnetic circular dichroism (XMCD) at the Eu L-edge (2p->5d) in two compounds exhibiting valence fluctuation, namely EuNi2(Si0.18Ge0.82)2 and EuNi2P2, has been investigated at pulsed high magnetic fields of up to 40 T. A distinct XMCD peak corresponding to the trivalent state (Eu3+; f6), whose ground state is no…

High-pressure phase and transition phenomena in ammonia boraneNH3BH3from x-ray diffraction, Landau theory, andab initiocalculations

Yaroslav Filinchuk、Andriy H. Nevidomskyy、Dmitry Chernyshov 等 4 位作者2009-06-19Physical Review B

Structural evolution of a prospective hydrogen storage material, ammonia borane ${\text{NH}}_{3}{\text{BH}}_{3}$, has been studied at high pressures up to 12 GPa and at low temperatures by synchrotron powder diffraction. At 293 K and above 1.1 GPa a disordered $I4mm$ structure reversibly transforms into a new ordered…

Mingying Peng、Cordt Zollfrank、Lothar Wondraczek2009-06-19Journal of Physics Condensed Matter

Bi-doped glasses with broadband photoluminescence in the near-infrared (NIR) spectral range are presently receiving significant consideration for potential applications in telecommunications, widely tunable fiber lasers and spectral converters. However, the origin of NIR emission remains disputed. Here, we report on N…

Bioresponsive, Cell-Penetrating, and Multimeric MR Contrast Agents

Jody L. Major、Thomas J. Meade2009-06-19OpenAlex

Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) has become increasingly popular in experimental molecular imaging and clinical radiology because it is non-invasive and capable of producing three-dimensional representations of opaque organisms with high spatial and temporal resolution. Approximately 35% of all clinical MR scans utili…

Subjecting a graphene monolayer to tension and compression

Georgia Tsoukleri、J. Parthenios、Konstantinos Papagelis 等 8 位作者2009-06-19OpenAlex

An experimental set‐up for loading graphene flakes in both tension and compression is shown in the image. This technique allows investigation not only of bare flakes (just laid out on the plastic substrate) but also of flakes embedded within the beam. The embedded graphene flakes can sustain tensile strains of over 1.…

DFT+Ucalculations of the ground state and metastable states of uranium dioxide

Boris Dorado、Bernard Amadon、Michel Freyss 等 4 位作者2009-06-19OpenAlex

We report a study of the ground state and metastable states of uranium dioxide using ab initio $\text{DFT}+\text{U}$ calculations. We highlight that in order to avoid metastable states and systematically reach the ground state of uranium dioxide with $\text{DFT}+\text{U}$, the monitoring of occupation matrices is cruc…

Fmoc-Diphenylalanine Self-Assembly Mechanism Induces Apparent pKa Shifts

Claire Tang、Andrew M. Smith、Richard F. Collins 等 5 位作者2009-06-19OpenAlex

We report the effect of pH on the self-assembly process of Fmoc-diphenylalanine (Fmoc-FF) into fibrils consisting of antiparallel beta-sheets, and show that it results in two apparent pKa shifts of approximately 6.4 and approximately 2.2 pH units above the theoretical pKa (3.5). Using Fourier transform infrared (FTIR)…

The crystallographic information file (CIF)

Alexander J. Blake2009-06-18Oxford University Press eBooks

The CIF is a universally recognised file format for transmission, archive, and retrieval of crystal structure results. It is based on a published and maintained specification, the basic points of which are described together with some definitions of terms, and advice on using the standard correctly and effectively. Us…

Preparation of Two-dimensional Array of Nanodots by Ferritin Template

Ting Wang、Hyung Wook Choi、In Sang Yoo 等 5 位作者2009-06-18Molecular Crystals and Liquid Crystals

Zinc selenide (ZnSe) nanocrystals were synthesized in the cavity of the apoferritin from horse spleen (HsAFr), and two-dimensional ZnSe-ferritin nanodots were prepared by simple touch method on modified silicon surface. In the synthesis, ZnSe nanocrystals are encapsulated and growth is restricted to the internal dimen…

Shannon P. Farrell、Patti E. Quigley、Kyle J. Avery 等 6 位作者2009-06-18Journal of Physics D Applied Physics

Magnetostrictive Fe–Ga wires 1–3 mm in diameter have been prepared using an innovative cost-effective approach—based on the Taylor wire method—that couples the advantages of high-temperature directional solidification and selective grain growth. Strict control of drawing processes has been shown to enable the introduc…

Rh(ttp)H ( 1d ) is suggested to be the key intermediate for the carbon−oxygen bond cleavage.
