Ground-State Interactions of Spermine-Substituted Naphthalimides with Mononucleotides

Sun McMasters、Lisa A. Kelly2005-12-14The Journal of Physical Chemistry B

Water soluble spermine, spermine-naphthalimide, and pyridinium-substituted 1,8-naphthalimide derivatives have been synthesized as nucleotide-specific binding agents. Both mono- and bifunctionalized spermine compounds were studied. The photophysical properties of each compound were studied by using time-resolved and st…

Shaoqing Wang、H Q Ye、Sidney Yip2005-12-14Journal of Physics Condensed Matter

We investigate the stress–strain relationship and elastic stability of zinc-blende GaP, GaN, InP and BN lattices under hydrostatic pressure by first-principles calculation. A simple and direct ab initio implementation for studying the mechanical properties of cubic crystals is developed. The four phases' full-set stre…

J. Kim、Yong Chan Choi、K-S Chang 等 4 位作者2005-12-14Nanotechnology

We report the first direct observation of the formation process of an alumina nanowire (ANW) array from a porous anodic alumina (PAA) membrane employing a simple droplet etching method, not a general immersion etching method, using field emission scanning electron spectroscopy (FESEM). The PAA membrane is prepared by…

Dendritic nano- and microhydrogels fabricated by triethoxysilyl focal dendrons

Daisuke Onoshima、Toyoko Imae2005-12-14Soft Matter

Nano- and microhydrogels were fabricated in water by first to third generation triethoxysilyl focal poly(amido amine) dendrons with hexyl spacer. The focal points of dendrimers were hydrolyzed and covalent-bonded through the simple sol-gel process at an acidic or basic catalytic condition. The growth of aggregates and…

A Novel Method to Evaluate the Influence of Hydrogen on Fatigue Properties of High Strength Steels

Y. Matsubara、Hideki Hamada2005-12-14Journal of ASTM International

Abstract In rolling contact fatigue, hydrogen is believed to contribute to early flaking failures under some conditions. Hydrogen diffuses quickly in steels, even at room temperature, thus resulting in its dissipation into the surrounding atmosphere. This condition presents a uniquely difficult challenge for evaluatin…

Surprising conductive- and dielectric-system dispersion differences and similarities for two Kohlrausch-related relaxation-time distributions

J. Ross Macdonald2005-12-14Journal of Physics Condensed Matter

General distributions of relaxation times are discussed and then specialized to two types associated with Kohlrausch stretched-exponential temporal response, the K0 and K1 models. For the important choice of 1/3 for their beta shape parameters, their specific distributions and different temporal responses are first co…

Magnetic anisotropy in the cubic Laves REFe2intermetallic compounds

K N Martin、P.A.J. de Groot、B.D. Rainford 等 7 位作者2005-12-14Journal of Physics Condensed Matter

In the past, the Callen–Callen (1965 Phys. Rev. 139 A455–71; 1966 J. Phys. Chem. Solids 27 1271–85) model has been highly successful in explaining the origin and temperature dependence of the magneto-crystalline anisotropy in many magnetic compounds. Yet, despite their high ordering temperatures of ∼650 K, the Callen–…

New Soft Chemical Routes to Ferroelectric SrBi2Ta2O9

Keshwaree Babooram、Zuo‐Guang Ye2005-12-14Chemistry of Materials

Ferroelectric ceramics of strontium bismuth tantalate, SrBi 2 Ta 2 O 9 (SBT), have been synthesized in pure layer-structured perovskite phase by two new soft chemical techniques, namely, a sol−gel process and a coprecipitation method. The sol−gel process utilizes ethylene glycol as solvent while the coprecipitation te…

Deformation-promoted reactivity of single-walled carbon nanotubes

Kausala Mylvaganam、L C Zhang2005-12-14Nanotechnology

This paper investigates the effect of mechanical deformation of a single-walled carbon nanotube (SWNT) on its reactivity with hydrogen and alkyl radicals. The influence of individual loading modes was explored with the aid of molecular dynamics simulation for deformation and quantum mechanics analysis for reaction. Th…

Thomas D. Yuzvinsky、Adam Fennimore、András Kis 等 4 位作者2005-12-14Nanotechnology

We have fabricated ordered arrays of nanoscale torsional actuators consisting of metal mirrors bonded to precisely oriented multiwall carbon nanotubes. The fabrication is facilitated by a new nanotube positioning method which employs localized electron beam activation of polymer residue on a silicon oxide surface.
