Effect of defects on the thermal conductivity in a nanowire

Ke‐Qiu Chen、Wenxia Li、Wenhui Duan 等 5 位作者2005-07-12Physical Review B

We investigate the effect of defects on the low temperature thermal conductance in nanowire structure by using the scattering-matrix method. It is found the behavior of the thermal conductance versus temperature is qualitatively different for different types of defects. When the defect is void, the universal quantum t…

Fabrication of a Metal Nanoparticles and Polymer Nanofibers Composite Material by an in Situ Chemical Synthetic Route

Kaushik Mallick、Mike J. Witcomb、A. Dinsmore 等 4 位作者2005-07-12Langmuir

This work demonstrated a facile route for the synthesis of poly(3,5-dimethyl aniline) nanofibers by polymerization of 3,5-dimethyl aniline using Pd-acetate as the oxidant. The reduction of Pd ion is accompanied by oxidative polymerization of 3,5-dimethyl aniline, leading to a metal-polymer composite material. Palladiu…

Nonspecific Interactions of a Carboxylate-Substituted PPE with Proteins. A Cautionary Tale for Biosensor Applications

Ik‐Bum Kim、Anna Dunkhorst、Uwe H. F. Bunz2005-07-12Langmuir

Two carboxylate-substituted, fluorescent (Phi = 0.08), water-soluble poly(p-phenyleneethynylene)s (PPE) and a water-soluble model compound were exposed to a series of proteins and bovine serum. While the anionic PPEs do not have any specific binding sites, they form stable complexes with histone, lysozyme, myoglobin,…

Structural Study of Irregular Amino Acid Sequences in the Heavy Chain of Bombyx mori Silk Fibroin

Sung-Won Ha、Hanna Gracz、Alan E. Tonelli 等 4 位作者2005-07-12Biomacromolecules

Recently, genetic studies have revealed the entire amino acid sequence of Bombyx mori silk fibroin. It is known from X-ray diffraction studies that the beta-sheet crystalline structure (silk II) of fibroin is composed of hexaamino acid sequences of GAGAGS. However, in the heavy chain of B. mori silk fibroin, there are…

Magnetic reordering in the vicinity of a ferromagnetic/antiferromagnetic interface

P. J. Jensen、H. Dreysee、Miguel Kiwi2005-07-12arXiv

The magnetic arrangement in the vicinity of the interface between a ferromagnet and an antiferromagnet is investigated, in particular its dependence on the exchange couplings and the temperature. Applying a Heisenberg model, both sc(001) and fcc(001) lattices are considered and solved by a mean field approximation. De…

Superconducting metamaterials

Michael Ricci、Nathan D. Orloff、Steven M. Anlage2005-07-12Applied Physics Letters

Evanescent wave amplification has been predicted under the ideal condition that the index of refraction, n=−1+i0 precisely, but is difficult to observe in practice because current metamaterials suffer from high losses. We present experimental results on a metamaterial that employs superconducting Nb metals and low-los…

On dislocations in a special class of generalized elasticity

Markus Lazar、Gérard A. Maugin、Elias C. Aifantis2005-07-12physica status solidi (b)

Abstract In this paper we consider and compare special classes of static theories of gradient elasticity, nonlocal elasticity, gradient micropolar elasticity and nonlocal micropolar elasticity with only one gradient coefficient. Equilibrium equations are presented but higher‐order boundary conditions are not of concer…

Quasi-Two-Dimensional Diluted Magnetic Semiconductor Systems

Donald Priour、E. H. Hwang、S. Das Sarma2005-07-12Physical Review Letters

We develop a theory for two-dimensional diluted magnetic semiconductor systems (e.g., Ga(1-x)Mn(x)As layers) where the itinerant carriers mediating the ferromagnetic interaction between the impurity local moments, as well as the local moments themselves, are confined in a two-dimensional layer. The theory includes exa…

Two-dimensional electron and hole gas systems, enabled through band structure design and epitaxial growth on planar substrates, have served as key platforms for fundamental condensed matter research and high performance devices. The analogous development of one-dimensional (1D) electron or hole gas systems through con…

Dmitry Ruzmetov、Yongho Seo、Land J. Belenky 等 10 位作者2005-07-12arXiv

Precise arrays of sub-100 nm diameter nanodots are fabricated from magnetic oxide perovskites with the total coverage area up to 5 mm2. Epitaxial single crystal structure of the nanodots is demonstrated by cross-sectional TEM. Low temperature MFM study confirmed the ferromagnetism of the produced particles.

Deviations from the Summerfield scaling in the piezoelectric PbZr0.57Ti0.43O3

M. Mahesh Kumar、Z. -G. Ye2005-07-12arXiv

Extending our earlier observations of the deviations from Summerfield scaling in a crystalline ferroelectric system of SBCT, we have studied the scaling of conductivity in another ferro/piezoelectric perovskite crystalline oxide, PZT. The deviations from Summerfield scaling are found at T greater than TC. Correction t…

Bound states of tunneling electrons in molecular wires

M. A. Kozhushner、V. S. Posvyanskii、I. I. Oleynik2005-07-12arXiv

We have studied the bound states of the extra electron in a molecular wire, corresponding to the physical situation of the electron tunneling through the wire. Based on formalism of the scattering operator that accounts for many-electron interactions we have shown that the energy spectrum of the bound states of the ex…

Electrochemical Templating of Metal Nanoparticles and Nanowires on Single-Walled Carbon Nanotube Networks

Thomas M. Day、Patrick R. Unwin、Neil R. Wilson 等 4 位作者2005-07-12Journal of the American Chemical Society

The use of single-walled carbon nanotube (SWNT) networks as templates for the electrodeposition of metal (Ag and Pt) nanostructures is described. Pristine SWNTs, grown on insulating SiO2 surfaces using catalyzed chemical vapor deposition, served as the working electrode. In the simplest case, electrical contact was ma…

T. Ramanathan、H. Liu、L. Catherine Brinson2005-07-12Journal of Polymer Science Part B Polymer Physics

Abstract In this paper, we present results for polymer nanocomposites of poly‐ (methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) and amide‐functionalized SWNTs. The results demonstrate that even at very low loadings, 1 wt % (0.5 vol %), the mechanical and electrical properties are significantly improved. The improvement over PMMA properti…

The effect of the aspect ratio of rectangular holes on the transmissivity of periodic arrays of subwavelength holes in optically thick metal films is investigated. Stephan Hofmann、Gábor Cśanyi、Andrea C. Ferrari 等 5 位作者2005-07-12OpenAlex

We present the temperature dependence of the growth rate of carbon nanofibers by plasma-enhanced chemical vapor deposition with Ni, Co, and Fe catalysts. We extrapolate a common low activation energy of 0.23-0.4 eV, much lower than for thermal deposition. The carbon diffusion on the catalyst surface and the stability…
