Insulin research in China and the U.K.

You‐Shang Zhang2011-09-21Biochemical Society Transactions

Insulin has been extensively studied since it was discovered by Banting and Best in 1921. Early in 1934, Dorothy Crowfoot and John Desmond Bernal obtained the first X-ray diffraction photograph of an enzyme protein: pepsin. In 1935, they took another photograph of a protein hormone: insulin. The chemical structure of…

2011-09-21Key engineering materials

Calibration and exploitation of failure criterion is at present a challenging field in the structural integrity scenario. Calibrated failure criteria allow the simulation/reproduction of damages using virtual approach and eventually further assessment of the residual integrity of the components. Therefore the increase…

Abstract This article describes the results of a study of Cu/Ni multilayer coatings applied on a monocrystalline Si(100) silicon substrate by the deposition magnetron sputtering technique. Composed of 100 bilayers each, the multilayers were differentiated by the Ni sublayer thickness (1.2 to 3 nm), while maintaining t…

In order to carry out precise measurements of the thickness of a dielectric layer deposited on a metal surface two-dimensionally, we have introduced an ellipsometric measurement technique (EMT) to a new modified Otto configuration (MOC) that is used for observing surface plasmon resonance (SPR). In the conventional MO…

Fatigue Behavior in Filled Natural Rubber: Study of the Mechanical Damage Dynamics

Luisa Munoz、Loïc Vanel、Olivier Sanséau 等 7 位作者2011-09-21Key engineering materials

Rupture dynamics in reinforced elastomers is a much more complex process than in pure elastomers due to the intrinsic heterogeneous mixture of a rubber matrix with filler particles at submicronic scale. In the case of natural rubber, an additional source of heterogeneity is the strain-crystallization effect. How ruptu…

Presently, one of the most interesting approaches to the generation of H 2 is based on sulphur-based cycles, that however require structural components able to work in a corrosive environment at high temperature. Silicon carbide (SiC) is one of the most promising materials for this application, and to increase its lim…
