Abstract The reaction between BaCO 3 and Fe 2 O 3 in the proportions necessary for the formation of the hexaferrite has been studied in air. The decarbonation reaction was followed by measuring weight loss isothermally, the formation of hexaferrite by measurement of saturation magnetisation and by X‐ray diffractometry…
The governing partial differential equation for the distribution of orientations is obtained for nematic liquid crystals. The boundary condition for orientation at the surface of the container depends on the type of surface and the type of liquid crystal. Two extreme cases, orientation either parallel or perpendicular…
The electrochemical behavior of high purity aluminum has been studied to clarify the corrosion behavior of the metal when exposed to oxygen free and oxygen saturated saline solutions of varying pH. The mixed or corrosion potential, EM, of the electropolished high purity aluminum decreases as the pH is increased except…

An apparatus has been designed and constructed to determine the effects of applied oscillatory loads on fibres. It includes a piezoelectric transducer to register the oscillatory loads on the fibre. This, combined with a strain gauge bridge system and suitable amplification, provides signals directly proportional to t…

Efficiency factors are proposed describing the effectiveness of utilization of fibre stiffness and strength when a random distribution of extensible fibres is incorporated in a brittle matrix. A length efficiency factor for strength calculation is derived, which includes the effect of sliding friction during fibre pul…
A recently elaborated theory of the p-V-T properties successfully describes the behavior of amorphous polymers above the glass temperature. The improvement over earlier results arises from the introduction of a vacancy fraction which is obtained as a function of volume and temperature by a maximization of the partitio…
Detailed electron microscopic investigations confirmed that the shape anisotropies of the columnar grains grown in iron films evaporated at oblique incidence, which are parallel and perpendicular to the columnar grain axis, are principally responsible for both of the anisotropy fields H k (1) and H k (2) analyzed from…
Abstract The heats of fusion and the melting transitions of the crystallinity present in the side chains were determined for selected copolymers incorporating n ‐octadecyl acrylate or vinyl stearate. A major purpose of this investigation was to ascertain the effect of interrupting the long ordered 18‐carbon side chain…

The thermal expansion coefficient α of Fe-Ni ( fcc ) alloys was measured in the range from 800°C to room temperature. Below the Curie temperature T c , the α– T curve exhibits an anomaly corresponding to the spontaneous volume magnetostriction ω s . The `paramagnetic' thermal expansion coefficient α p below T c was de…
A defect structure which incorporates singly and doubly ionized nonstoichiometric oxygen vacancies and acceptor states, presumably associated with impurities, was inferred from the agreement between the theoretically derived relation image and the experimentally observed O 2 ‐partial‐pressure and temperature dependenc…
The effect of thermal history on yielding behavior of atactic polystyrene, isotactic polystyrene, polycarbonate, and polymethyl methacrylate was examined by correlating the deformed microstructure with measured density changes and compressive stress-strain studies. Electron micrographs of bulk polymers and thin films…
In this study histochemical experiments have been carried out in order to understand the "staining mechanism" of phosphotungstic acid (PTA). One of the main objectives of this project was to investigate the mode of interaction of the heavy metal and to define the type of functional groups in the substrates responsible…
The active slip planes, the Burgers vector, and the critical resolved shear stress to induce macroscopic deformation in ZrB 2 single crystals were determined. Room‐temperature microhardness indentation and high‐temperature uniaxial compression loadings were used to induce deformation. Slip occurred in a close‐packed α…
The vapor phase in equilibrium with cuprous chloride has been studied using the Knudsen effusion-mass spectrometric technique. The polymeric species Cu3Cl3, Cu4Cl4, and Cu5Cl5 were observed, the first two in comparable amounts. Partial pressures and heats of vaporization for each species were measured: 3 CuCl(s)→Cu3Cl…
