Investigating the glassy to rubbery transition of polydextrose and corn flakes using automatic water vapor sorption instruments, DSC, and texture analysis

Qingruisi Li2010-08-20Illinois Digital Environment for Access to Learning and Scholarship (University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign)

The aim of this study was to investigate the usefulness of automated sorption isotherm methods for determining the glassy to rubbery transition in a model amorphous food material, polydextrose. The automated sorption isotherms were obtained from 20 to 40??C at 5??C intervals using dynamic vapor sorption (DVS). The DVS…

Molecular Orientation of a Nematic Between Concentric Cylinders: Weak Anchoring Situation

C. A. R. Yednak、R. Teixeira de Souza、G. G. Lenzi 等 5 位作者2010-08-20Molecular Crystals and Liquid Crystals

The molecular orientation of a nematic sample limited by two concentric cylinders is theoretically investigated. The surfaces are assumed as having an inhomogeneous distribution of easy directions. The results are found in the one-constant approximation, in the presence of an external electric field, for weak anchorin…

On the existence of a structural instability in sub-critical crystalline fluctuations in a supercooled liquid

Peter Harrowell2010-08-20Journal of Physics Condensed Matter

The square gradient free energy functional is used to describe the distribution of sub-critical crystalline fluctuations in a supercooled liquid. We show that for any supercooling there exists a cluster radius of 3-4 particle diameters below which the crystalline order is no longer stable. We explore the consequences…

The Devitrification of Artificial Fibers: A Multimethodic Approach to Quantify the Temperature–Time Onset of Cancerogenic Crystalline Phases

Paola Comodi、Fabio Cera、G. Diego Gatta 等 5 位作者2010-08-20The Annals of Occupational Hygiene

A variety of artificial fibers extensively employed as lining in high-temperature apparatus may undergo a devitrification process that leads to significant changes in the chemical-physical properties of the materials. Among them, the crystallization of carcinogenic minerals, such as cristobalite, has already been docu…

Solvent-based self-healing polymeric materials

Mary M. Caruso2010-08-20Illinois Digital Environment for Access to Learning and Scholarship (University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign)

Mechanical damage to bulk polymers typically begins as a microcrack, which can lead to eventual failure of the material if there is no method to inhibit crack growth. In living systems, this damage automatically initiates a healing response. Following the example of nature, self-healing polymers are engineered with th…

Controlling the nanodot formation on GaAs surface during focused ion beam processing

S. Dhamodaran、J. Ramkumar2010-08-20Radiation effects and defects in solids

GaAs processed using gallium-focused ion beams for the fabrication of photonic devices mostly results in gallium nanodots on the surface. These gallium nanodots may produce unwanted effects and deteriorate the optical and electrical properties of the devices. We have investigated the FIB processing of GaAs with and wi…

PEDOLOGICAL DEVELOPMENT ON FOUR DIFFERENT PARENT MATERIALS

Mustafa Usul、Orhan Dengız2010-08-20DergiPark (Istanbul University)

The influence of parent materials on soil properties has long been recognized. Early pedologists and soil geographers based their concepts of soils largely on its presumed parent material. Later, parent material was viewed simply as a factor that influences soil development-an influence that diminishes in importance w…

Dichloridobis(3,4,5-trimethyl-1H-pyrazole-κN2)cobalt(II)

Ganna Lyubartseva、Sean Parkin2010-08-20Acta Crystallographica Section E Structure Reports Online

In the title compound, [Co(II)Cl(2)(C(6)H(10)N(2))(2)], a pair of 3,4,5-trimethyl-pyrazoles act as monodentate ligands. Two Cl(-) anions are also bonded directly to the Co(II) atom, which has a CoN(2)Cl(2) chromophore in a slightly distorted tetra-hedral geometry. The two mol-ecules in the asymmetric unit are related…

Spiropyrans as color-generating mechanophores

Douglas A. Davis2010-08-20Illinois Digital Environment for Access to Learning and Scholarship (University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign)

Due to the size scale of the molecules they work with, chemists are normally limited to indirect means of inducing and controlling chemical reactions. Sometimes, the inherent reactivity and structure of the reactants and the properties of the products such as thermodynamic stability can be relied upon to give the desi…

Analysis of carbon nanotube chiralities obtained from a bimetallic Co‐Mo catalyst

Martin Fouquet、Stephan Hofmann、C. Thomsen 等 4 位作者2010-08-20physica status solidi (b)

Abstract All growth methods for single‐walled carbon nanotubes (SWNTs) usually result in a wide distribution of chiral indices (n,m). Bimetallic catalysts can narrow this distribution 1,2 . Here we grow SWNTs by a Co‐Mo catalyst and measure the different chiral distributions for an array of growth parameters. A CoMo‐a…
