Hugoniot of shocked liquid deuterium up to 300 GPa: Quantum molecular dynamic simulations

Cong Wang、X. T. He、Ping Zhang2010-08-15Journal of Applied Physics

Quantum molecular dynamic (QMD) simulations are introduced to study the thermophysical properties of liquid deuterium under shock compression. The principal Hugoniot is determined from the equation of states, where contributions from molecular dissociation and atomic ionization are also added onto the QMD data. At pre…

Pyroelectric response of ferroelectric nanowires: Size effect and electric energy harvesting

Anna N. Morozovska、Eugene А. Eliseev、G. S. Svechnikov 等 4 位作者2010-08-15Journal of Applied Physics

The size effect on pyroelectric response of ferroelectric nanowires is analyzed. The pyroelectric coefficient strongly increases with the wire radius decrease and diverges at critical radius Rcr corresponding to the size-driven transition into paraelectric phase. Size-driven enhancement of pyroelectric coupling leads…

Gradient theory for plasticity via homogenization of discrete dislocations

Adriana Garroni、Giovanni Leoni、Marcello Ponsiglione2010-08-15Journal of the European Mathematical Society

We deduce a macroscopic strain gradient theory for plasticity from a model of discrete dislocations. We restrict our analysis to the case of a cylindrical symmetry for the crystal under study, so that the mathematical formulation will involve a two-dimensional variational problem. The dislocations are introduced as po…

Gap closing and universal phase diagrams in topological insulators

Shuichi Murakami2010-08-15arXiv

We study a general problem how the gap in a nonmagnetic band insulator closes by tuning a parameter. We review our recent results on the classification of all the possible gap closing in two and three dimensions. We show that they accompany the change of Z_2 topological numbers, and that the gap closings correspond to…

Spin relaxation in $n$-type (111) GaAs quantum wells

B. Y. Sun、P. Zhang、M. W. Wu2010-08-15arXiv

We investigate the spin relaxation limited by the D'yakonov-Perel' mechanism in $n$-type (111) GaAs quantum wells, by means of the kinetic spin Bloch equation approach. In (111) GaAs quantum wells, the in-plane effective magnetic field from the D'yakonov-Perel' term can be suppressed to zero on a special momentum circ…

Nanostructured electrodes for thermionic and thermotunnel devices

Avto N. Tavkhelidze2010-08-15Journal of Applied Physics

Recently, distinctive quantum features have been studied in the area of ridged quantum wells (RQWs). Periodic ridges on the surface of the quantum well layer impose additional boundary conditions on the electron wave function and reduce the quantum state density. Electrons, rejected from forbidden quantum states, have…

Enhancement of silicon solar cell efficiency by upconversion: Optical and electrical characterization

Stefan Fischer、Jan Christoph Goldschmidt、Philipp Löper 等 9 位作者2010-08-15Journal of Applied Physics

Upconversion (UC) of subband-gap photons is a promising possibility to enhance solar cell efficiency by making also the subband-gap photons useful. For this application, we investigate the material system of trivalent erbium doped sodium yttrium fluoride (NaYF4:20%Er3+), which shows efficient UC suitable for silicon s…

Structural, electrical, and optical properties of atomic layer deposition Al-doped ZnO films

Parag Banerjee、Won–Jae Lee、Ki-Ryeol Bae 等 5 位作者2010-08-15Journal of Applied Physics

Al-doped ZnO (AZO) films of ∼100 nm thickness with various Al doping were prepared at 150 °C by atomic layer deposition on quartz substrates. At low Al doping, the films were strongly textured along the [100] direction, while at higher Al doping the films remained amorphous. Atomic force microscopy results showed that…

Observation of spontaneous Bose-Einstein condensation of excitons at sub-Kelvin temperatures

Kosuke Yoshioka、Eunmi Chae、Makoto Kuwata‐Gonokami2010-08-14arXiv (Cornell University)

Bose-Einstein condensation (BEC) is a quantum mechanical phenomenon directly linked to the quantum statistics of bosons. While cold atomic gases provide a new arena for exploring the nature of BEC, a long-term quest to confirm BEC of excitons, quasi-Bose particles formed as a bound state of an electron-hole pair, has…

The single-stranded DNA-binding proteins are crucial in all kinds of DNA metabolic processes. Deinococcus SSB-like proteins are homodimers in nature and contain two OB folds per monomer, in contrast to other bacterial SSB proteins that are functionally active as homotetramers. We generated four truncated variants of D…
