Another Method for Determining the Pressure inside an Intact Carbonated Beverage Can (or Bottle)

Thomas S. Kuntzleman、Christopher M. Richards2010-07-08Journal of Chemical Education

Previous letters and articles in this Journal have described methods for finding the pressure of CO 2 inside carbonated beverages. One communication in particular describes a method for estimating this pressure without even opening the container. This communication describes yet another method, using a combination of…

Comment on “Deformation of biological cells in the acoustic field of an oscillating bubble”

Youngsoo Choi、Won Suk Ohm、Yong-Tae Kim2010-07-08Physical Review E

A recent paper by Zinin [Phys. Rev. E 79, 021910 (2009)] regarding the dynamics of biological cells in an acoustic field draws conclusions that we find open to debate. The present paper examines these conclusions and addresses some findings.

Improved EUV filter transmission with plasma cleaning

B. M. Lairson、Dave Grove、Ryan Smith 等 7 位作者2010-07-08Proceedings of SPIE, the International Society for Optical Engineering/Proceedings of SPIE

As-fabricated free-standing indium foils were found to have transmission in the 90nm to 120nm band ranging from 10% to 70% of modeled values based on pure indium. Auger depth profiling of the as-deposited indium showed little surface contamination and high purity. However, final freestanding filters were found to have…

Joachim Renz、Raja Shahid Ashraf、Tobias Erb 等 7 位作者2010-07-08Macromolecular Chemistry and Physics

Abstract Polymer/fullerene bulk heterojunction solar cells consisting of PDDTP:PCBM blends have been investigated and optimized. The structural properties of the photoactive layers were studied by GID‐XRD, which revealed a pronounced response of photovoltaic parameters on the polymer crystallinity. In addition to P3HT…

Jia Sun、Jie Jiang、Aixia Lu 等 4 位作者2010-07-08Journal of Physics D Applied Physics

The polarization mechanism of a microporous SiO2-based solid electrolyte is developed and three polarizations (electric double layer formation, ionic relaxation and dipole relaxation) are identified. The polarization response of the microporous SiO2-based solid electrolyte is optimized by tuning the deposition tempera…

Fibre laser sensor based on a phase-shifted chirped grating for acoustic sensing of partial discharges in power transformers

Sanderson E. U. Lima、Orlando Frazão、R.G. Farias 等 7 位作者2010-07-08Proceedings of SPIE, the International Society for Optical Engineering/Proceedings of SPIE

Partial discharges are a major source of insulation failure in electric power transformers. Their detection can be achieved through the associated acoustic emissions, and this work reports on the investigation of a fibre laser sensor based on a phase-shifted chirped fibre grating for acoustic emission detection in the…

A Feasibility Study of Ribbon Architecture for PEM Fuel Cells

Daniel Walczyk、Jaskaran S. Sangra2010-07-08Journal of Electrochemical Energy Conversion and Storage

The feasibility of an alternative fuel cell architecture, called a ribbon membrane electrode assembly (MEA), is demonstrated for low-temperature polymer electrolyte membrane (PEM) fuel cells used in portable power applications by comparing it to a traditional bipolar “stack” architecture. A ribbon MEA consists of adja…

Photochromic polymers for making volume phase holographic gratings: between theory and practice

Andrea Bianco、Giorgio Pariani、Chiara Bertarelli 等 4 位作者2010-07-08Proceedings of SPIE, the International Society for Optical Engineering/Proceedings of SPIE

Volume Phase Holographic Gratings (VPHGs) are dispersing elements which are finding wide spread in modern optical instrumentations, also in the astronomical field. Since photochromic materials show a change in the refractive index (Δn) upon photoirradiation, in principle they can be conveniently applied to produce rew…

Small-Scale Mechanical Characterization of Aluminum and Titanium Alloys

Matthew Sanders、Frank Di Bella、Hong Liang2010-07-08Journal of Testing and Evaluation

Abstract A Small Punch Test method with 3 mm diameter and 0.5 mm thick specimens was utilized to characterize 3003-H14 aluminum, 2618-T61 aluminum, and Ti-6Al-4V alloys. The method was found to be repeatable and the effect of surface roughness negligible within the range of 0.450–3.011 μm. In addition, the titanium ha…

Microscopic model of cuprate superconductivity

Richard H. Squire、N. H. March2010-07-08International Journal of Quantum Chemistry

Abstract We present a model for cuprate superconductivity based on the identification of an experimentally detected “local superconductor” as a charge 2 fermion pairing in a circular, stationary density wave. This wave acts like a highly correlated local “boson” satisfying a modified Cooper problem with additional cor…
