Direct Growth of γ-Glycine from Neutral Aqueous Solutions by Slow, Evaporation-Driven Crystallization

Guangwen He、Venkateswarlu Bhamidi、Scott R. Wilson 等 6 位作者2006-07-12Crystal Growth & Design

This study reports the selective growth of γ-glycine crystals via concentrating microdroplets of aqueous glycine solutions through slow evaporation of water using an evaporation-based crystallization platform. In prior studies, γ-glycine crystals could only be obtained from non-neutral pH solutions, by applying electr…

Chemical and Electrical Passivation of Single-Crystal Silicon(100) Surfaces through a Two-Step Chlorination/Alkylation Process

E. Joseph Nemanick、Patrick T. Hurley、Lauren J. Webb 等 7 位作者2006-07-12The Journal of Physical Chemistry B

Single-crystal Si(100) surfaces have been functionalized by using a two-step radical chlorination-Grignard (R = MgCl, R = CH3, C2H5, C4H9, C6H5, or CH2C6H5) alkylation method. After alkylation, no chlorine was detectable on the surface by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), and the C 1s region showed a silicon-ind…

Self‐Assembling Molecular Dumbbells: From Nanohelices to Nanocapsules Triggered by Guest Intercalation

Ja‐Hyoung Ryu、Hojoong Kim、Zhegang Huang 等 5 位作者2006-07-12Angewandte Chemie International Edition

Dumbbells that are not dumb: Dumbbell-shaped molecules based on a hexa-p-phenylene derivative self-assemble into well-defined left-handed helical fibers in aqueous solution. These helical nanofibers convert reversibly into hollow nanocapsules by intercalation of aromatic guest molecules (red spheres).

High-resolution neutron powder diffraction has been used to investigate the structures and phase transitions in the double perovskites Ba(2)Bi(3+)Bi(5+)O(6) (dibarium dibismuth hexaoxide) and Ba(2)BiSbO(6) (dibarium bismuth antimony hexaoxide) in the temperature ranges 4.2-973 and 4.2-625 K, respectively. The charge-o…

Quantum Transport of Slow Charge Carriers in Quasicrystals and Correlated Systems

Guy Trambly de Laissardière、Jean‐Pierre Julien、Didier Mayou2006-07-12Physical Review Letters

We show that the semiclassical model of conduction breaks down if the mean free path of charge carriers is smaller than a typical extension of their wave function. This situation is realized for sufficiently slow charge carriers and leads to a transition from a metalliclike to an insulatinglike regime when scattering…

Influence of the inhomogeneous field at the tip on quantitative piezoresponse force microscopy

T. Jungk、A. Hoffmann、E. Soergel2006-07-12arXiv

Ferroelectric domain imaging with piezoresponse force microscopy (PFM) relies on the converse piezoelectric effect: a voltage applied to the sample leads to mechanical deformations. In case of PFM one electrode is realized by the tip, therefore generating a strongly inhomogeneous electric field distribution inside the…

Orbital contribution to the magnetic properties of nanowires: Is the orbital polarization ansatz justified?

Marie-Catherine Desjonqueres、Cyrille Barreteau、Gabriel Autes 等 4 位作者2006-07-12arXiv

We show that considerable orbital magnetic moments and magneto-crystalline anisotropy energies are obtained for a Fe monatomic wire described in a tight-binding method with intra-atomic electronic interactions treated in a full Hartree Fock (HF) decoupling scheme. Even-though the use of the orbital polarization ansatz…

Enhanced Ultraviolet Emission from ZnS-Coated ZnO Nanowires Fabricated by Self-Assembling Method

Jinhua Li、Dongxu Zhao、Xiuqing Meng 等 8 位作者2006-07-12The Journal of Physical Chemistry B

A simple chemical route for ZnS-coated ZnO nanowires with preferential (002) orientation is reported. Sodium sulfide and zinc nitrate were employed to supply S and Zn atoms at 60 degrees C to form ZnS-coated ZnO nanowires structures. Electron diffraction measurement shows that the ZnO/ZnS core-shell nanostructure is s…

Local load sharing fiber bundles with a lower cutoff of strength disorder

Frank Raischel、FERENC KUN、Hans J. Herrmann2006-07-12arXiv

We study the failure properties of fiber bundles with a finite lower cutoff of the strength disorder varying the range of interaction between the limiting cases of completely global and completely local load sharing. Computer simulations revealed that at any range of load redistribution there exists a critical cutoff…

Ultrasonically Induced Opening of Polyelectrolyte Microcontainers

Dmitry G. Shchukin、Dmitry A. Gorin、Helmuth Möhwald2006-07-12Langmuir

The effect of ultrasonic treatments of different intensity and duration on the integrity and permeability of polyelectrolyte capsules was investigated both in poly(allylamine)/poly(styrene sulfonate) and Fe(3)O(4)/poly(allylamine)/poly(styrene sulfonate) polyelectrolyte capsules. Ultrasonic treatment of polyelectrolyt…

Particle-size dependence of orbital order-disorder transition inLaMnO3

Nandini Das、Parthasarathi Mondal、Dipten Bhattacharya2006-07-12Physical Review B

The latent heat $(L)$ associated with the orbital order-disorder transition at ${T}_{JT}$ is found to depend significantly on the average particle size $(d)$ of $\mathrm{La}\mathrm{Mn}{\mathrm{O}}_{3}$. It rises slowly with the decrease in $d$ down to $\ensuremath{\sim}100\phantom{\rule{0.3em}{0ex}}\mathrm{nm}$ and th…

Broad boron sheets and boron nanotubes: Anab initiostudy of structural, electronic, and mechanical properties

Jens Kunstmann、Alexander Quandt2006-07-12Physical Review B

Based on a numerical ab initio study, we discuss a structure model for a broad boron sheet, which is the analog of a single graphite sheet, and the precursor of boron nanotubes. The sheet has linear chains of $sp$ hybridized $\ensuremath{\sigma}$ bonds lying only along its armchair direction, a high stiffness, and ani…

Joong Jiat Teo、Yu Chang、Hua Chun Zeng2006-07-12OpenAlex

In this work, a template-free synthetic approach for generating single-crystalline hollow nanostructures has been described. Using the small optical band-gap cuprous oxide Cu(2)O as a model case, we demonstrate that, instead of normally known spherical aggregates, primary nanocrystalline particles can first self-aggre…

Type testing the Model 6600 plus automatic TLD reader

K.J. Velbeck、Ling Luo、Karen Streetz2006-07-11Radiation Protection Dosimetry

The Harshaw Model 6600 Plus is a reader with a capacity for 200 TLD cards or 800 extremity cards. The new unit integrates more functionality, and significantly automates the QC and calibration process compared to the Model 6600. The Model 6600 Plus was tested against the IEC 61066 (1991-2012) procedures using Harshaw…

Collective motion of atoms in grain boundary migration of a bcc metal

Lang Zhou、Nan Zhou、Gyuho Song2006-07-11The Philosophical Magazine A Journal of Theoretical Experimental and Applied Physics

Molecular dynamics simulations of grain boundary (GB) migration of a bcc metal, tungsten, have been carried out. The GB is of asymmetrical ⟨ 110⟩ tilt type. Detailed examinations of atomic processes in the migration, show that the GB migration consists mainly of GB dislocation glides. Furthermore, each motion of a GB…
