Stability of liquid crystalline polymers

Athene M. Donald、Alan H. Windle、S. Hanna2010-02-11Cambridge University Press eBooks

Introduction Amolecule is said to be mesogenic if it is able to form liquid crystalline phases. However, the actual occurrence of liquid crystallinity depends on other factors as well. In thermotropic systems, the liquid crystalline phase only exists within a particular temperature range. It lies between the crystal m…

Performance Issues for Actuators and Internal Components During Long Pulse Operation on Tore Supra

J. Bucalossi2010-02-11IEEE Transactions on Plasma Science

In a fusion device, long pulse operation adds a set of specific constraints on actuators and internal components. Some of these issues are analyzed through the 20-year experience of Tore Supra which is, to date, the largest Tokamak that is able to run long-duration discharges (hundreds of seconds). Superconducting mag…

Block copolymers have drawn increasing attention for fabricating functional nanomaterials due to their properties of self-assembly. In particular, photonic crystals hold promise for multiple optical applications. We prepared 1D photonic crystals with polystyrene-b-poly(2-vinyl pyridine) (PS-b-P2VP) lamellar films whic…

Challenges and opportunities of manufacturing the next generation of integrated photonics

Rajendra Singh、Nishant Gupta、Jacob Sadie 等 6 位作者2010-02-11Proceedings of SPIE, the International Society for Optical Engineering/Proceedings of SPIE

Integrated photonics has the potential of fabricating a diverse set of photonic systems on a single substrate. At nanoscales (< 100 nm), the properties of material depend on quantum confinements. The challenge is to integrate these unique properties of nanostructures into low-cost manufacturing. For material depositio…

We present the use of luminescent terbium complexes (LTCs) as FRET donors and luminescent semiconductor quantum dots (QDs) as FRET acceptors for spectroscopic ruler measurements. The LTCs were labeled to polyhistidine-appended peptides which self-assembled onto three different QDs allowing optical multiplexed measurem…

Single femtosecond pulse nanochannel formation in glass

Jeffrey F. Herbstman、Alan Hunt2010-02-11Proceedings of SPIE, the International Society for Optical Engineering/Proceedings of SPIE

Single pulse femtosecond laser damage in transparent dielectrics has been shown to occur through nonlinear damage mechanisms that can allow material removal on scales well below the classical limit of the order of the wavelength of the incident light. These mechanisms can be harnessed to allow the optical machining of…
