中性子回折を用いて代表的マルチフェロイック物質RMnO3とRMn2O5の磁気構造の研究が行われてきた。単結晶を用いた磁気構造解析により両物質が強誘電相でサイクロイド型磁気構造を持つことが明らかにされた。更に電場下での偏極中性子回折によりサイクロイドの回転方向と自発電気分極の方向が一対一対応していることも見出された。これによりサイクロイド型磁気秩序が直接的に自発電気分極を創出していることが実験的に証明された。
