Liquid-crystal lens with a focal length that is variable in a wide range

Mao Ye、Bin Wang、Susumu Sato2004-12-10Applied Optics

A liquid-crystal (LC) lens driven by two voltages is reported. The lens has a focal length that is electrically tunable. The range of the variable focusing power is very wide, covering approximately 0.8-10.7 D. In the entire focal range the LC lens maintains high optical quality. The LC lens can be driven in a simple…

Heat Capacity of Isotopically Enriched 28Si, 29Si and 30Si

A. Gibin、G. G. Devyatykh、A. V. Gusev 等 6 位作者2004-12-10arXiv

The heat capacity of isotopically enriched 28Si, 29Si, 30Si samples has been measured in the temperature range between 4K and 100K. The heat capacity of Si increases with isotopic mass. The values of the Debye temperature for the three isotopic varieties of silicon have been determined. Good agreement with the theoret…

Influence of Pressure on the Structure and Electronic Properties of the Layered Superconductor Y2C2I2

Kyungsoo Ahn、Reinhard K. Kremer、Arndt Simon 等 6 位作者2004-12-10arXiv

The structural properties under hydrostatic pressure up to 3 GPa of the layered rare earth carbide halide superconductor Y2C2I2 are studied by neutron powder diffraction at room temperature. The compressibilities are anisotropic, such that the compressibility perpendicular to the layers being approximately twice as la…

Linear and Circularly Polarized Light to Study Anisotropy and Resonant Scattering in Magnetic Thin Films

Helio C. N. Tolentino、Julio C. Cezar、Narcizo M. Souza-Neto 等 4 位作者2004-12-10arXiv

The remarkable polarization properties of the synchrotron light have lead to the advent of modern synchrotron-related spectroscopic studies with angular and/or magnetic selectivity. We give here an overview of the prominent aspect of the polarization of the light delivered by a bending magnet, and some dichroic proper…

Spontaneous Dissolution of a Single-Wall Carbon Nanotube Salt

Alain Pénicaud、Philippe Poulin、Alain Derré 等 5 位作者2004-12-10Journal of the American Chemical Society

Upon reduction with alkali metals, single-wall carbon nanotubes (SWNTS) are shown to form polyelectrolyte salts that are soluble in polar organic solvents without any sonication, use of surfactants, or functionalization whatsoever, thus forming true thermodynamically stable solutions of naked SWNTs.

Distribution of magnesium in coral skeleton

Anders Meibom、Jean‐Pierre Cuif、F. Hillion 等 8 位作者2004-12-10Geophysical Research Letters

Ion micro‐probe imaging of the aragonite skeleton of Pavona clavus , a massive reef‐building coral, shows that magnesium and strontium are distributed very differently. In contrast to strontium, the distribution of magnesium is strongly correlated with the fine‐scale structure of the skeleton and corresponds to the la…

Heterodimers of Nanoparticles: Formation at a Liquid−Liquid Interface and Particle-Specific Surface Modification by Functional Molecules

Hongwei Gu、Zhimou Yang、Jinhao Gao 等 5 位作者2004-12-10OpenAlex

On the basis of a fundamental property of nanoparticles, the self-assembling at a liquid-liquid interface to form "colloidosomes", a heterogeneous reaction takes place on the exposed surface of the nanoparticles to produce the heterodimers of two distinct nanospheres, which can be modified by two different functional…

F. Stevens、Véronique Van Speybroeck、Ewald Pauwels 等 6 位作者2004-12-09Physical Chemistry Chemical Physics

An extensive level of theory study is performed on diatomic chalcogen defects in alkali halide lattices by density functional theory methods. A variety of exchange correlation functionals and basis sets are used for the calculation of electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) parameters of XY (X, Y = O, S, Se) molecular i…

Synthesis and Purification of Single-Walled Carbon Nanotubes by AC Arc Discharge

Masato Ohkohchi、Xinluo Zhao、Sakae Inoue 等 4 位作者2004-12-09Japanese Journal of Applied Physics

Single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWNTs) were synthesized in a mixed gas of H 2 and Ar by AC arc discharge. The catalyst used in the synthesis was a single Fe catalyst. SWNTs containing a negligible number of nanoparticles were obtained. A novel purification method, in which synthesized soot is heated and oxidized in si…

Coherent scatter x-ray imaging of plastic/water phantoms

Mohammad Nisar、Paul C. Johns2004-12-09Proceedings of SPIE, the International Society for Optical Engineering/Proceedings of SPIE

Conventional medical x-ray imaging, based on the transmission of primary photons, works well to distinguish between hard and soft tissues. Up to 90% of the photons that reach the image receptor, however, are coherently or incoherently scattered, and so there is growing interest in utilizing scattered x rays for diagno…

Impurity effects on resonant Andreev reflection in a finite-sized carbon nanotube system
