The effect of contact angle hysteresis (CAH) was studied on various polymer substrates with traditional and new experimental techniques. The new experimental technique presented in the article is based on the slow deformation of the droplet, thus CAH is studied under the constant volume of the drop in contrast to exis…

An electronic phase with coexisting magnetic and ferroelectric order is predicted for graphene ribbons with zigzag edges. The electronic structure of the system is described with a mean-field Hubbard model that yields results very similar to those of density functional calculations. Without further approximations, the…

This paper reports a method for assembling midnanosized Au nanoparticles (25 < d < 100 nm) into close-packed 2D arrays with a high degree of local order. An in situ coating of Au nanoparticles with an alkanethiol surfactant can induce close-packed particle arrays when the nanoparticles are trapped at the interface. Th…

We present predictions of the thermoelectric figure of merit ( ZT) of Si nanowires with diameter up to 3 nm, based upon the Boltzman transport equation and ab initio electronic structure calculations. We find that ZT depends significantly on the wire growth direction and surface reconstruction, and we discuss how thes…

Some of the most highly active organic electro-optic (EO) materials developed recently rely on the combination of an EO-active (chromophore-containing) host material (dendrimer or side-chain polymer) and an EO-active (chromophore) guest. These new binary-chromophore materials exhibit EO coefficients ( r 33 ) in the ra…

Using the recursive Green's function method, we study the problem of electron transport in a disordered single-layer graphene sheet. The conductivity is of order ${e}^{2}∕h$ and its dependence on the carrier density has a scaling form that is controlled solely by the disorder strength and the ratio between the sample…

ZnO wires are prepared from the oxidation of Zn wires, which are electrodeposited into AAO template. The ZnO wires show ferromagnetism at room temperature. A detailed study indicates that, owing to incomplete oxidation, Zn clusters embedded in the ZnO matrix may attribute to the room-temperature ferromagnetism.

In the series La_{2/3-x}Tb_{x}Ca_{1/3}MnO_{3}, it is known that the compositions are ferromagnetic for smaller values of x and show spin glass characteristics at larger values of x. Our studies on the magnetic properties of various compositions in the La_{2/3-x}Tb_{x}Ca_{1/3}MnO_{3} series show that the cross over fro…

While polymer solutions lack the mechanical stability only transiently cross-linked networks can fulfill the competing requirements of structural stability and maximal energy dissipation. Here, we show that transient cross-links entail local stress relaxation and energy dissipation in an intermediate elasticity domina…

We report on a positive colossal magnetoresistance (MR) induced by metallization of $\mathrm{Fe}{\mathrm{Sb}}_{2}$, a nearly magnetic or ``Kondo'' semiconductor with $3d$ ions. We discuss the contribution of orbital MR and quantum interference to the enhanced magnetic field response of electrical resistivity.

We present the first measurements of cyclotron resonance of electrons and holes in bilayer graphene.
