J. G. Chigvinadze、A. A. Iashvili、J. V. Acrivos 等 5 位作者2005-08-01arXiv

By means of contactless mechanical method of the measurement of energy losses in superconductors, the anisotropy of dissipation processes has been studied in single crystal high-temperature layered superconductors of Yba2Cu3O7-d system, being in mixed state. The observed anisotropy of energy losses indicates the possi…

Atomic size effect in impurity indued grain boundary embrittlement

W. T. Geng、A. J. Freeman、G. B. Olson2005-08-01arXiv

Bismuth segregated to the grain boundary in Cu is known to promote brittle fracture of this material. Recently, Schweinfest et al. reported first-principles quantum mechanical calculations on the electronic and structural properties of a Cu grain boundary with and without segregated Bi and argue that the grain boundar…

Induced transparency in EXAFS as cuprate superconductors go through Tc

J. G. Chigvinadze、G. I. Mamniashvilli、J. V. Acrivos2005-08-01arXiv

The increased transmission, observed in the EXAFS region of their X-ray absorption spectra, as cuprate materials go through the superconducting transition temperature Tc is correlated with an increase in Abrikosov Vortex expulsion in zero magnetic field as the temperature T approaches Tc.

Nanoparticles of Mg(OH)2: Synthesis and Application to Paper Conservation

Rodorico Giorgi、Claudio Bozzi、Luigi Dei 等 6 位作者2005-08-01Langmuir

We report an investigation on the effects of counterions of magnesium salts on the homogeneous phase precipitation reaction to yield nanoparticles. The results provide new parameters to guide the control of the size, monodispersity, crystallinity, and morphology of Mg(OH)(2) nanoparticles. Evidence emerged that magnes…

Effects of Alkaline and Acid Pretreatments on Alaska Pollock Skin Gelatin Extraction

Peng Zhou、Joe M. Regenstein2005-08-01Journal of Food Science

ABSTRACT: Pretreatments with different alkalis and acids at different concentrations were used to determine their effects on gelatin extraction from Alaska pollock skin. The alkaline pretreatments with the OH concentrations lower than 0.5 mol/L removed noncollagenous proteins without significant loss of skin collagen.…

Mechanisms of fluorescence blinking in semiconductor nanocrystal quantum dots

Jau Tang、R. A. Marcus2005-08-01The Journal of Chemical Physics

The light-induced spectral diffusion and fluorescence intermittency (blinking) of semiconductor nanocrystal quantum dots are investigated theoretically using a diffusion-controlled electron-transfer (DCET) model, where a light-induced one-dimensional diffusion process in energy space is considered. Unlike the conventi…

Symmetry-Controlled Colloidal Nanocrystals: Nonhydrolytic Chemical Synthesis and Shape Determining Parameters

Young‐wook Jun、Jae‐Hyun Lee、Jin‐sil Choi 等 4 位作者2005-08-01The Journal of Physical Chemistry B

Since inorganic nanocrystals exhibit unique shape-dependent nanoscale properties and can be utilized as basic building blocks for futuristic nanodevices, a systematic study on the shape control of these nanocrystals remains an important subject in materials and physical chemistry. In this feature article, we overview…

Micro‐Raman Studies on DLC coatings

G. Irmer、Annett Dorner-Reisel2005-08-01OpenAlex

Abstract Raman scattering is an excellent tool to characterize nanocrystalline clusters and the structural arrangement of carbon atoms in carbon‐based materials. Diamond‐like carbon (DLC) films are used in many industrial applications due to their hardness, wear resistance and biological compatibility. The properties…

Targeted Drug Delivery in Cancer Therapy

Jaspreet K. Vasir、Vinod Labhasetwar2005-08-01OpenAlex

Chemotherapy has been the main modality of treatment for cancer patients; however, its success rate remains low, primarily due to limited accessibility of drugs to the tumor tissue, their intolerable toxicity, development of multi-drug resistance, and the dynamic heterogeneous biology of the growing tumors. Better und…

Polyol Synthesis of Silver Nanostructures: Control of Product Morphology with Fe(II) or Fe(III) Species

Benjamin J. Wiley、Yugang Sun、Younan Xia2005-08-01OpenAlex

Adjusting the concentration of Fe(II) or Fe(III) in the polyol reduction of silver nitrate allows for the production of either nanocubes or nanowires. Reduction by ethylene glycol maintained the iron ions in the reduced Fe(II) form, which in turn reacted with and removed adsorbed atomic oxygen from the surface of silv…

A Critical Review of the Stress Corrosion Cracking (SCC) of Magnesium Alloys

N. Winzer、Andrej Atrens、Guang‐Ling Song 等 8 位作者2005-08-01OpenAlex

Abstract This review aims to provide a foundation for the safe and effective use of magnesium (Mg) alloys, including practical guidelines for the service use of Mg alloys in the atmosphere and/or in contact with aqueous solutions. This is to provide support for the rapidly increasing use of Mg in industrial applicatio…

Investigation of smectite hydration properties by modeling experimental X-ray diffraction patterns: Part I. Montmorillonite hydration properties

Eric Ferrage2005-08-01OpenAlex

Hydration of the <1 μm size fraction of SWy-1 source clay (low-charge montmorillonite) was studied by modeling of X-ray diffraction (XRD) patterns recorded under controlled relative humidity (RH) conditions on Li-, Na-, K-, Mg-, Ca-, and Sr-saturated specimens. The quantitative description of smectite hydration, ba…

Polymer nanocomposite dielectrics - the role of the interface

M. Roy、J. K. Nelson、R.K. MacCrone 等 7 位作者2005-08-01OpenAlex

The incorporation of silica nanoparticles into polyethylene increased the breakdown strength and voltage endurance significantly compared to the incorporation of micron scale fillers. In addition, dielectric spectroscopy showed a decrease in dielectric permittivity for the nanocomposite over the base polymer, and chan…

Proposal of a multi-core model for polymer nanocomposite dielectrics

Toshikatsu Tanaka、Masahiro Kozako、Norikazu Fuse 等 4 位作者2005-08-01OpenAlex

A multi-core model, i.e. a simplified term of a multi-layered core model, is proposed as a working hypothesis to understand various properties and phenomena that polymer nanocomposites exhibit as dielectrics and electrical insulation. It gives fine structures to what are called "interaction zones". An interfacial laye…

Isothermal martensitic transformations

V. A. Lobodyuk、Emmanuil I. Estrin2005-07-31Physics-Uspekhi

Martensitic transformations have long been considered most characteristically athermal — in the sense that they develop, with changing temperature, at a tremendous temperature-independent rate and cease to occur at isothermal conditions. Over the past decades, however, isothermal martensitic transformations (IMTs), wh…
