In semiconductors with inversion asymmetry, spin-orbit coupling gives rise to the well-known Dresselhaus and Rashba effects. If one considers quantum wells with two or more conduction subbands, an additional, intersubband-induced spin-orbit term appears whose strength is comparable to the Rashba coupling, and which re…

Based on the Ti-vacancy defect compensation model, (Ba1−xLnx)Zr0.2Ti0.8−x∕4O3 (Ln=La,Sm,Eu,Dy,Y) ceramics have been fabricated via the conventional solid-state reaction method. The microstructures, dielectric properties, and ferroelectric relaxor behavior of (Ba1−xLnx)Zr0.2Ti0.8−x∕4O3 ceramics have been investigated.…

We address the problem of an unscreened Coulomb charge in graphene and calculate the local density of states and displaced charge as a function of energy and distance from the impurity. This is done nonperturbatively in two different ways: (1) solving the problem exactly by studying numerically the tight-binding model…

Roll model: A new “shape-transformation” concept (see picture) that proceeds through a rolling out of 1D tungsten oxide nanorods for the fabrication of laterally confined 2D WS2 nanosheet crystals has been developed. The resulting 2D WS2 nanosheet crystals show a significantly enhanced discharge capacity for applicati…

A simple yet highly reproducible method to suppress contamination of graphene at low temperature inside the cryostat is presented. The method consists of applying a current of several milliamperes through the graphene device, which is here typically a few microns wide. This ultrahigh current density is shown to remove…

The manuscript reports experimental estimation of Cesium Chloride film's band gap and compares it with theoretical simulations. The band gap shows a strong dependence on it's lattice constant. Also, it is seen that the point defects present in the films strongly affects it's optical properties.

Abstract We demonstrate a new method through sol–gel processes for the preparation of patterned zirconia thin films by using directed self-assembly into patterns reflecting the phase-separated structures of mixed Langmuir–Blodgett films. Atomic force microscopy and Kelvin probe force microscopy images confirmed the fo…

Aliovalent K(0.92)In(0.46)Nb(0.54)OPO(4) (KINP, potassium indium niobium oxide phosphate) features a chain structure involving corner-sharing [MO(6)] octahedra (M = In/Nb), which allows this compound to be recognized as a member of the KTiOPO(4) (KTP) family. However, its crystallization in the polar space group P4(1)…

ZnO/TiO 2 nanohybrid structures have been synthesized by the simple method of the site-specific deposition of titanium oxide on ZnO nanorods. The polarity of the ZnO (0001) surface plays an important role in the formation of the nanohybrid structures. Using high-resolution transmission electron microscopy, we observed…

Conformational flexibility is emerging as a central theme in enzyme catalysis. Thus, identifying and characterizing enzyme dynamics are critical for understanding catalytic mechanisms. Herein, coupling analysis, which uses thermodynamic analysis to assess cooperativity and coupling between distal regions on an enzyme,…

Well-aligned ZnO nanorod and nanobolt arrays were synthesized on p-type Si(100) substrates by a simple physical vapor deposition method. During the growth process when the carrier gas was switched from Ar to air, the nanorods changed into nanobolts completely. The mechanism for this transformation process is discussed…
