Calculated Structures and Energies of Grain Boundaries in α‐Al 2 O 3

Philip R. Kenway1994-02-01Journal of the American Ceramic Society

Static‐lattice calculations of the energies and structures of {10 1 n} (n = 0, 1, and 4) and {0001} grain boundaries in α‐AI 2 O 3 using three different potentials are reported. It was found that the energies of boundaries perpendicular to the (0001) direction vary between 0.3 and 0.9 J·m −2 . These compare favorably…

Novel Hybrid Inorganic-Organic Abrasion-Resistant Coatings Prepared by a Sol-Gel Process

B. Wang、Garth L. Wilkes1994-02-01Journal of Macromolecular Science Part A

Novel abrasion-resistant coatings prepared by a sol-gel process have been developed and applied on the polymeric substrate Bisphenol A polycarbonate. In general, coatings utilize either 4,4′-diaminodiphenyl sulfone (DDS) or diethylenetriamine (DETA) that are then functionalized at their amine groups with 3-isocyanatop…

Evolution of Microstructure and Viscoelasticity during Flow Alignment of a Lamellar Diblock Copolymer

Rangaramanujam M. Kannan、Julia A. Kornfield1994-02-01Macromolecules

ABSTRACT The effects of flow alignment on the relaxation dynamics of a lamellar dihlock copolymer melt and the dynamics of flow alignment itself are investigated using simultaneous measurements of shear stress and birefringence in both the flow plane and the sample plane. The primary advantage of this rhea-optical app…

Dielectric breakdown in high-ε films for ULSI DRAMs: II. barium-strontium titanate ceramics

J. F. Scott、M. Azuma、Carlos A. Paz de Araújo 等 6 位作者1994-02-01Integrated ferroelectrics

We present a study of breakdown fields in BaxSr1−xTiO3 ceramics as functions of thickness, temperature, applied voltage ramp rate, electrode material and cross-sectional area. The data show evidence of Zener-like breakdown mechanisms. The d.c. leakage currents at voltages below breakdown are dominated by tunneling inj…

Ti−Ni thin films with three different compositions (Ti−48at.%Ni, Ti−50at.%Ni and Ti−51 at.%Ni) were prepared by sputtering. The sputter-deposited films were annealed at 773 K for 1 h to achieve crystallization. The stress-strain curves for the annealed films were measured over a wide temperature range (143–473 K) usin…

Raman and far‐infrared spectra of formamide at temperatures down to 20 K

B. H. Torrie、B. A. Brown1994-02-01Journal of Raman Spectroscopy

Abstract The Raman and infrared wavenumbers of solid HCONH 2 and DCOND 2 were measured at 20 K and high temperatures. More peaks were observed in both the lattice and internal mode regions than were expected from the known structure, so the structure was redetermined. The resulting structure is in agreement with earli…

Newspaper as a substrate for cellulolytic landfill bacteria

Stephen Cummings、C.S. Stewart1994-02-01Journal of Applied Bacteriology

Five cellulolytic bacterial isolates ( Clostridium and Eubacterium spp.) from a methane‐producing landfill were examined to determine their ability to utilize newspaper as a substrate for growth. Solubilization was poor with even the most actively cellulolytic bacteria. The major factor causing the low activity seemed…

Deoxidation of Molten Metals by Short Circuiting Yttria‐Stabilized Zirconia Electrolyte Cell

Shi Yuan、Uday B. Pal、Kuo Chih Chou1994-02-01Journal of The Electrochemical Society

A one‐end‐closed yttria‐stabilized zirconia (YSZ) tube, which is an oxygen ion conductor, was used to remove oxygen from molten copper. A thin layer of porous cermet electrode was deposited on the inner wall of the YSZ tube. The outer surface of the tube was in contact with the melt and the inner surface with a flowin…

Molecular-dynamics study of dynamical properties of dense soft-sphere fluids: The role of short-range repulsion of the intermolecular potential

Shaw Kambayashi、Yasuaki Hiwatari1994-02-01Physical review. E, Statistical physics, plasmas, fluids, and related interdisciplinary topics

Isokinetic molecular-dynamics simulations have been performed for soft-sphere fluids of 4th-, 6th-, 9th-, and 12th-inverse-power potentials near the respective freezing point. We have investigated how various dynamical properties of these fluids are influenced by the softness of the potentials to which some groups of…

Partial Discharges in Gaseous Voids for DC Voltage

F.H. Kreuger、U. Fromm1994-02-01Japanese Journal of Applied Physics

When designing ac insulation systems much knowledge and experience is available concerning partial discharges. However, for dc insulation there is a lack of knowledge of partial discharges and their effect on reliability and lifetime. For this reason we conducted a study on the distribution functions of the discharge…

Gas sensing properties of phthalocyanine langmuir—blodgett films

S. Mukhopadhyay、C. A. Hogarth1994-02-01Advanced Materials

Ideal microsensors would be cost effetive, efficient, and stable, detect low concentrations of a certain gas in a working enviornment, and be able to operate in real time, i.e., monitor continuously. Among the compounds being ivestigated for development into microsensors are the phthalocyanines (Pcs), in particular in…

The electrohydrodynamic instability in twisted nematic liquid crystals

A. Hertrich、A. P. Krekhov、O. A. Scaldin1994-02-01Journal de Physique II

We present some experiments on electrohydrodynamic convection (EHC) in nematic liquid crystals with a planar, but twisted configuration (MBBA). The threshold voltage is shown to depend only weakly on the twist angle. A theoretical analysis of the onset behaviour agrees well with the experiments. More sensitive is a se…
