Fuel cells are a versatile, renewable energy source that can be used in a wide range of applications. In this paper, topologies for a 10 kW inverter system with a low voltage fuel cell input are evaluated based on simplicity, performance, and cost. This particular fuel cell system is intended for household stand-alone…

This paper reports a dramatic reduction of liquid droplet flow resistance by engineering the surfaces into nanomechanical hydrophobic structures that show a contact angle over 175/spl deg/. Flow resistances of droplets on open surfaces as well as in confined microchannels (between surfaces) have been measured with sig…

A new variation to the dry gel conversion method for the preparation of zeolite is introduced, where the conversion to zeolite was accomplished under water vapor below the saturation condition. The dry gel was made either by vacuum concentration or by surfactant flocculation from a silica precursor sol after the preli…

Recently, there has been significant interest in materials with simultaneously negative permeability and permittivity, also referred to as negative refractive index metamaterials. Metamaterials comprised of straight metal wires and split ring resonators operating in the long wavelength regime exhibit a microwave frequ…

A double-walled carbon nanotube is used to study the radial charge distribution on the positive inner electrode of a cylindrical molecular capacitor. The outer electrode is a shell of bromine anions. Resonant Raman scattering from phonons on each carbon shell reveals the radial charge distribution. A self-consistent t…

Carbon nanotubes are nanometer-scale materials with important properties, but their use in nanofabrication will require further development of methods for controlled positioning at well-defined locations on surfaces. We have devised an approach for specifically localizing single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWNTs) onto 1-…

Stress-induced voiding is observed in Cu-based, deep-submicron, dual-damascene technologies where voids are formed under the via when the via connects to a wide metal lead below it. The voiding results from the supersaturation of vacancies that develops due to grain growth when the Cu is not properly annealed prior to…
