The heterogeneous liquid-phase esterification reaction of lactic acid with ethyl alcohol accompanied with lactoyllactic acid hydrolysis over heteropoly acid supported on ion exchange resin catalysts was investigated at 343 K with ethanol to lactic acid molar ratio of 1∶1. The catalysts with 5–20% of tungstophosphoric…
Abstract The effects of applied current, testing time and microstructure on the electrochemical properties of magnesium‐based sacrificial anodes in potable water were evaluated. Galvanostatic tests, potentiodynamic polarisation and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) analyses were used to determine anode efficiency, co…
The effect of hot and cold rolling on the pickling of austenitic stainless steels is introduced. The formation of an oxide scale and a chromium-depleted layer during annealing, the composition and structure of that oxide scale and their effects on the subsequent pickling process are reviewed. The preliminary pickling…
Poly(L-lactide) (PLLA) is considered to be a possible candidate for feedstock recycling because thermal degradation of PLLA can result in the recovery of its monomer, L,L-lactide. One of the serious problems concerning the feedstock recycling of PLLA has been the racemization of lactide. To control the racemization in…
Chlorine induced corrosion is the most important corrosion process in power plants, firing waste, coal and/or biomass. Depending on the process, chlorine is present as HCl gas, as solid KCl and NaCl in ashes or as eutectic melts i.e. KCl–ZnCl2 in deposits of waste fired boilers. In the presence of HCl gas and solid ch…
Homeotropically oriented liquid-crystalline (LC) physical gels have been prepared from a room temperature nematic liquid crystal with negative dielectric anisotropy and a low molecular weight gelator containing an L-lysine moiety. The oriented self-aggregated fibres of the gelator are formed by the template effect of…
Two new manganese(II) compounds of formula [Mn(mal)(H2O)(2,4′-bpy)]n (1) and [Mn2(mal)2(H2O)2(4,4′-bpy)]n (2) (2,4′-bpy = 2,4′-bipyridine, 4,4′-bpy = 4,4′-bipyridine and H2mal = malonic acid) have been prepared and structurally characterized by X-ray crystallography. Their structures are made up of two- (1) and three-…
SUMMARY Saline-sodic water is used to irrigate crops where supplies of good-quality water are scarce or in areas affected by high, saline water tables. This review covers the basic irrigation principles, practices, and limitations of irrigation with saline and saline-sodic water. The focus of this review is on studies…
An ion-exchangeable layered polysiloxane containing alkylammonium groups was synthesized by sol–gel reaction of 3-aminopropyltrimethoxysilane (APTMOS) catalyzed by hydrochloric acid; the present reaction system provides a new method for the preparation of layered polysiloxane materials.
Red phosphorescence properties on Mn ions doped MgO–GeO2 compounds, Mg4GeO6,Mg2GeO4, and MgGeO3, were investigated. The red phosphorescence was observed in MgGeO3:Mn2+. The red phosphorescence intensity of MgGeO3:Mn2+ increased withadding the MgF2 and Yb2O3. The red phosphorescence duration time of sample with a batch…
Large facetted hollow silica vesicles were synthesized by directed growth of silica on equilibrium icosahedrally facetted catanionic vesicles, made from cetyltrimethylammonium hydroxide/myristic acid surfactant bilayers. Three critical parameters were identified: (i) the surface charge of the vesicles; (ii) the rate o…
Photoemission is one of the principal techniques for the characterization and investigation of condensed matter systems. The field has experienced many developments in recent years, which may also be put down to important achievements in closely related areas. This timely and up-to-date handbook is written by experts…
A technical background on and applications of a guided wave technology called the magnetostrictive sensor are described. The magnetostrictive sensor technology is for long range global testing and condition monitoring of structures such as piping, plates and steel cables. For long range testing of piping in processing…
The electrochemical double-layer capacitor (EDLC) is an emerging technology that promises to play an important role in meeting the demands of electronic devices and systems both now and in the future. This paper traces the history of the development of the technology.and explores the principles and theory of operation.…
Abstract Additives have a great effect on the crystal morphology of organic compounds. The molecular modeling techniques were applied to predict the morphological modifications induced by additives. Besides molecular modeling software additionally some simulation approaches are needed. The build‐in and the surface doc…
An electrochemical method for the preparation of sodium peroxycarbonate at boron-doped diamond anodes has been described. Effects of experimental conditions such as current density, electrolyte concentration and anode materials on the formation of sodium peroxycarbonate have been investigated. The maximum current effi…
- The retention of chemical structure and functional groups during pulsed plasma polymerization was used for producing adhesion-promoting plasma polymer layers with high concentrations of exclusively one kind of functional groups, such as OH, NH2, or COOH. The maximum content of functional groups was 31 OH using allyl…
