ポリメタクリル酸メチル(PMMA),ポリスチレン(PS)などの非晶性光学ポリマーは,ガラス状態では熱力学的に非平衡な状態であり,Tg 付近の温度では体積やエンタルピーなどの熱力学量が緩和し,化学的な変化を伴わない物理的エイジングが起こる.エイジングがポリマーの光学特性に及ぼす影響について研究することは,ポリマーを光学材料へ応用する場合の,光学特性の安定性・信頼性を吟味する上で重要である.筆者らは,エイジングによるわずかな体積変化を,プリズムカップリング法を用いた屈折率測定により評価している.ここでは,PS ガラスのエイジングに伴う屈折率変化について報告する.
