The alumina–zirconia (Al 2 O 3 –ZrO 2 ) system is considered as one of the most useful nanocomposites, finding widespread applications in structural field. To provide optimal performance, the scale reduction of the initial powder or of the final grain morphology is of particular importance. To accomplish this, we deve…

Air-Trapping on Biocompatible Nanopatterns

Elena Martines、Kris Seunarine、Hywel Morgan 等 6 位作者2006-11-07Langmuir

The occurrence of air-trapping inside poly-eta-caprolactone nanopits was investigated by measuring the contact angles of water droplets on a set of defined nanotopographies. It is shown that the advancing angles follow the Cassie-Baxter theory, thus revealing the presence of air bubbles inside the biodegradable nanopa…

Structural transition in rare earth oxide clusters

D. Nicolas、Bruno Masenelli、P. Mélinon 等 7 位作者2006-11-07The Journal of Chemical Physics

Size effects, such as structure transition, have been reported in small clusters of alkali halide compounds. We extend the study to rare earth sesquioxide (Gd(2)O(3)) clusters which are as ionic as the alkali halide compounds, but have a more complicated structure. In a clean and controlled environment (ultra high vac…

Local Environment of Yttrium in Y-Doped Barium Cerate Compounds

Alessandro Longo、Francesco Giannici、A. Balerna 等 6 位作者2006-11-07Chemistry of Materials

The local structure of yttrium in Y-doped BaCeO 3 compounds was studied using X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS) at the Y K-edge. Data analysis shows that the local environment of Y 3+ changes, resulting in a distorted octahedron. The structural distortion found does not depend on the dopant amount at the investigate…

Selection of TiN as the Interconnect Material for Measuring the Electrical Conductivity of Polymer‐Derived SiCN at High Temperatures

Hee‐Yeon Ryu、Rishi Raj2006-11-07Journal of the American Ceramic Society

Three transition metals, Ni, Mo, and Ti, were reacted with SiCN at high temperatures, and the reaction products characterized by X‐ray diffraction. It was concluded that TiN is the most suitable interconnect material for the measurement of the electrical conductivity of SiCN at temperatures up to 1400°C. The TiN inter…

Mechanical Design for Accommodating Thermal Expansion Mismatch in Multilayer Coatings for Environmental Protection at Ultrahigh Temperatures

Jie Bai、Kurt Maute、Sandeep R. Shah 等 4 位作者2006-11-07Journal of the American Ceramic Society

The design of coatings is like designing a system. Every coating has one or more specific functions that determine the choice of materials, and its architecture. In the case of environmental barrier coatings the topcoat must be chemically inert to the atmosphere. In high‐temperature applications the stresses arising f…

Flammability studies of sodium thiosulphate or metabisulphite impregnated wood using cone calorimeter

I Šimkovic、Helena Martvon̆ová、Desana Maníková 等 4 位作者2006-11-07Fire and Materials

Abstract Spruce wood boards impregnated with Na 2 S 2 O 3 or Na 2 S 2 O 5 were studied with the cone calorimeter. The presence of Na 2 S 2 O 3 lowered the average heat release rate in comparison to untreated material. The total amounts of CO and CO 2 production were reduced by the treatment and also the specific extin…

Novel cationic porphyrin derivatives having a galactose or a bis(isopropylidene)galactose unit linked directly to a pyridine or to an aminophenyl group were characterized by electrospray tandem mass spectrometry (ESI-MS/MS). The electrospray mass spectra (ESI-MS) show the M(+) ions, since these porphyrins are already…

The Effects of Antibodies on Stilbene Excited‐State Energetics

Feng Tian、Erik Debler、David P. Millar 等 6 位作者2006-11-07Angewandte Chemie International Edition

You light up my life! Antibodies, when bound to a donor–acceptor-substituted stilbene, strongly fluoresce with colors ranging from blue to green. Photophysical and structural analyses indicate that antibody binding alters the excited-state behavior of stilbene. Such complexes may find in vitro and in vivo application…

Self-organization of nano-lines and dots triggered by a local mechanical stimulus

Fabio Biscarini、Massimiliano Cavallini、Rajendra Kshirsagar 等 7 位作者2006-11-07Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences

When a local mechanical perturbation is applied to the surface of a thin film of a mechanically interlocked molecule (a rotaxane), the molecules self-organize into periodic arrays of discrete dots or lines. The dimensionality of the nanostructures depends on whether the mechanical stimulus acts along a 1D line or over…

Isolated [Ni2H7]7− and [Ni4H12]12− Ions in La2MgNi2H8

Jean‐Noël Chotard、Yaroslav Filinchuk、B. Revaz 等 4 位作者2006-11-07Angewandte Chemie International Edition

Isolated and complex: La2MgNi2H8 contains isolated dinuclear [Ni2H7]7− and tetranuclear [Ni4H12]12− anions (see picture). These are the first polynuclear solid-state nickel hydride complexes. Their formation upon hydrogenation of the intermetallic compound La2MgNi2 is associated with a metal–insulator transition.
