Kinetics of crystallization in a shearing colloidal suspension

Scott Butler、Peter Harrowell1995-12-01Physical review. E, Statistical physics, plasmas, fluids, and related interdisciplinary topics

We report the kinetics of crystallization as observed in simulations of a charged colloidal suspension under shear. We find that the imposed shear flow inhibits crystal nucleation. Crystallization was only observed for shear rates at or below \ensuremath{\gamma}\ifmmode \dot{}\else \.{}\fi{}${\mathrm{\ensuremath{\tau}…

J. W. Christian、Gregory B. Olson、M. Cohen1995-12-01Journal de Physique IV (Proceedings)

Abstract. The displacive transformation classification proposed at ICOMAT 79 [I] is reviewed in light of recent progress in mechanistic understanding. Issues considered include distinctions between shuffle transformation vs. self-accommodating shear, dilatation vs. shear-dominant transformation, and nucleated vs. cont…

Ductile Shape Memory Alloys of the Cu-Al-Mn System

Ryosuke Kainuma、Shigeru Takahashi、K. Ishida1995-12-01Journal de Physique IV (Proceedings)

Cu-Al-Mn shape memory alloys with enhanced ductility have been developed by decreasing the degree of order in the β parent phase. Cu-Al-Mn alloys with Al contents lower than 18% exhibit good ductility with elongations of about 15% and excellent cold-workability arising from a lower degree of order in the Heusler (L21)…

Space charge and electrical conduction in Maleic Anhydride-grafted polyethylene

Seung Hyung Lee、Jung-Ki Park、Jaehong Han 等 4 位作者1995-12-01IEEE Transactions on Dielectrics and Electrical Insulation

The space charge behavior such as charge distribution and electrical conduction of maleic anhydride grafted LDPE (LDPE-g- MAH) was investigated. Heterocharge was found in LDPE and it decreased with increasing MAH graft ratio in LDPEg- MAH. Conduction currents also decreased with increasing MAH graft ratio. The relatio…

Thermodynamics of the Zr‐H System

Wei Wang、Donald R. Olander1995-12-01Journal of the American Ceramic Society

The consistencies among the reported univariant hydrogen pressures in the three two‐phase regions of the Zr‐H system, aZr/δZrH 2‐x αZr/βZr, and βRZr/δZrH 2–x , are evaluated with the thermodynamic constraint derived by Speiser. 16 Hydrogen dissolution in αZr is evaluated by checking the consistencies among the Sievert…

Rejection of narrow-band noise and repetitive pulses in on-site PD measurements

U. Köpf、K. Feser1995-12-01IEEE Transactions on Dielectrics and Electrical Insulation

This paper deals with the possibilities of noise suppression in partial discharge (PD) measurements under on-site conditions. After the presentation of previous work, a new concept of designing a digital FIR filter with a fixed order to suppress narrow-band disturbances will be presented. The method will be compared t…

The Effect of Hafnium Content on the Transformation Temperatures of Ni49Ti51-xHfx. Shape Memory Alloys

D.R. Angst、Paul E. Thoma、Ming-Yuan Kao1995-12-01Journal de Physique IV (Proceedings)

Ternary alloys of NiTiHf, having higher transformation temperatures than binary NiTi shape memory alloys, have been produced and analyzed. Beginning with a base composition of Ni49Ti51’, Hf was substituted for Ti up to 30 atomic percent. Differential scanning calorimetry was used to determine the transformation temper…

Synthesis of poly(L‐lactide)‐block‐polyisobutylene‐block‐poly(L‐lactide), a new biodegradable thermoplastic elastomer

László Sipos、Miklós Zsuga、György Deák1995-12-01Macromolecular Rapid Communications

Abstract The anionic ring‐opening polymerization of L‐lactide was initiated by dipotassium‐poly‐isobutylene‐alcoholate telechelic polymer to yield poly( L ‐lactide)‐ block ‐polyisobutylene‐ block ‐poly( L ‐lactide) triblock copolymer, a partially biodegradable thermoplastic elastomer. The pure triblock copolymer was o…

Site-selective laser-spectroscopy studies of the intrinsic 1.9-eV luminescence center in glassySiO2

Linards Skuja、Toshio Suzuki、Katsumi Tanimura1995-12-01Physical review. B, Condensed matter

The intrinsic 1.9-eV photoluminescence band (the R band) in neutron-irradiated synthetic silica glass has been studied using site-selective photoluminescence excitation in the 2.0 eV absorption band and transient spectral hole-burning techniques. The measurements of the low-energy wing of the zero-phonon line intensit…

Ab initioatomistic simulation of the strength of defective aluminum and tests of empirical force models

V. Deyirmenjian、Volker Heine、M. C. Payne 等 6 位作者1995-12-01Physical review. B, Condensed matter

The effects of atomic-scale voids on the strength and mechanical behavior of aluminum at zero temperature are investigated using the total-energy pseudopotential method. A series of calculations are performed in which the defective system is extended by a small increment and then is relaxed to its ground state configu…

Structure factors for synthetic yttrium orthoferrite, YFeO 3 , measured with MoKα (λ = 0.71073 A) X-radiation and using a smaller crystal with focused λ = 0.75 A synchrotron radiation are broadly consistent. Approximate symmetry in concordant difference densities indicates that cations deform the electron density more…

Fabrication of Polymer Shells Using a Depolymerizable Mandrel

Stephan A. Letts、E. M. Fearon、Steven R. Buckley 等 6 位作者1995-12-01Fusion Technology

A new technique for producing hollow shell laser fusion fuel capsules has been developed that starts with a depolymerizable mandrel. In this technique we use poly(α-methylstyrene) (PAMS) beads or shells as mandrels which are overcoated with plasma polymer. The PAMS mandrel is thermally depolymerized to gas phase monom…

Theo Smedes、N.P. van der Meijs、A.J. van Genderen1995-12-01OpenAlex

An increasingly urgent topic for the realization of densely packed (mixed signal) integrated circuits is prevention of cross-talk via the substrate. This paper proposes a Boundary Element Method (BEM) for calculating an admittance matrix for the substrate in order to analyze the parasitic coupling during layout verifi…

Blue Chromatophores in Two Species of Callionymid Fish

Makoto Goda、Ryozo Fujii1995-12-01ZOOLOGICAL SCIENCE

Dendritic chromatophores that contained blue pigmentary organelles were found in the bluish parts of the skin of two callionymid species, the mandarin fish, Synchiropus splendidus, and the psychedelic fish, S. picturatus. We named these novel cells “cyanophores” and the organelles “cyanosomes”. In response to various…

Irreversible polymer adsorption from semidilute and moderately dense solutions

Richard Zajac、Amitabha Chakrabarti1995-12-01Physical review. E, Statistical physics, plasmas, fluids, and related interdisciplinary topics

We present results from a Monte Carlo study of polymer adsorption from solution at a solid-liquid interface, in the limit of infinitely large adsorption energy. We study the kinetics of adsorbed layer formation for both the cases of end-functionalized chains and homopolymers. In the former case, the adsorbed layer is…
